The Market – Size, Characteristics and Consumer Preferences
Market Size Despite the declining birth rate in the second half of 90-ties, the market in the Czech Republic is attracting the attention of baby products manufacturers again. The number of babies is increasing every year and based on the predictions it will surpass the level of 1995 by the end of this year. This positive development is expected to continue until 2008 and then a slight decline is predicted. The reason for such a development is that the generation of baby boomers (i.e. people who were born in mid 70-ties) reached the average age for childbirth that was 28 in 2004. The other factor that contributes to this scenario, is women are postponing to have children at a later age, when their financial situation is stable and when the young families reach a higher level of disposable income means that they will spending more on babies and child care than in the pre-1990 era. The fact that the birth rate is set to increase in the next few years together with increasing average age for childbirth means that this market will grow in both volume and value terms.

Characteristics and Consumer Preferences Overall, baby products market in the Czech Republic has been comparatively underdeveloped and thus the potential for dynamic growth is relatively high. Brand awareness and competition between international brands, domestic suppliers and private labels is increasing. However, brand loyalty still remains low compared to the other European countries. Customers in the Czech Republic are interested in value for money and like to try new products. They are encouraged by frequent launches of new products by the leading multinational companies. Thus, expenditures for advertising are growing rapidly together with an aggressive marketing strategies and special promotional campaigns. Women’s magazines play an important role in the development of baby food, in particular those aimed at expectant or new mothers. The highest level of competition between the leading players is in the area of baby diapers. Economic improvement has a significant impact on sales as well. The higher disposable income of young families enables them to purchase higher quality products despite the fact, that the price is 30% higher than the price of other available goods.
2
As the number of internet users grew, the online sales has become popular and fast developing. It is expected that its importance in the sale of baby products will grow. High potential is especially for diapers, as competitive prices and home delivery will provide a convenient way of purchasing these products by young parents. With regard to baby care, the Czech consumers prefer quality products despite the fact that they have to pay higher price. Very popular were internationally produced products, because consumers believed that they are of higher quality than domestic ones. However, this opinion is slowly wearing off. Among the popular brands purchased in the Czech Republic are: Baby garments: COCCODRILLO, TUP-TUP, DUPAP, PRINCE OLIVER, TULEC TREND, MARIQUITA Baby carriages: Mutsy, Patron Bohemia, Jeep, Rockstar, Quinny, Maxi Cosi, Inglesina, Teutonia, Hauck, Esprit, Stokke, Bebe Confort, Baby nipples and comforters: Avent, Chicco, Just 4 Kids, Royal Baby Baby diapers: Pampers, Huggies, Fixies, Helen Harper, Libero, Nambolina

Czech Republic’s Major Baby Products Manufacturers
(i)
Baby garments Due to the increasing competition from China, many of the Czech textile companies have closed down. Among the largest producers, who are able to meet the competition are e.g. Loana a.s., Maja a.s.,NB-Textil spol. s r.o., and Tenax spol. s r.o. Majority of baby textile producers are companies with 15 and less employees or sole tailors.
(ii)
Baby carriages Czech’s largest baby carriage manufacturer, Liberta, which was distributing its products all East European countries, was closed down. The production was taken over by the company Patron Bohemia, which is now the leading exporter of baby carriages. The rest of the manufacturers are small scale companies with less than 15 employees.
(iii)
Baby nipples and comforters The Czech Republic produces its baby nipples and comforters. This is also one of the reasons, why exports of these articles surpass imports. Among the largest manufacturers are Vulkan a.s. and Rubena a.s. Majority of the manufacturers of rubber products are medium size companies with 20-50
3
employees. Nipples production is also part of a secondary production of one of the most significant Czech plastic producers Tesla a.s. (iv) Baby diapers Leading Czech’s manufacturing companies which produced baby diapers were bought over by international companies such as HARTMANN-RICO, Procter & Gamble and ONTEX CZ.

Trade in baby products recorded positive trends and constantly growing. In 2004, trade increased by 10.6%, to USD300.11 million (2003: USD271.34 million). The preliminary data for the year 2005 confirms this upward trend. The significant increase of both, imports and exports, which was recorded in 2003, was a reaction to the high demand for baby products, connected with the baby boom. Together with the constant growth of childbirth, an increase of imports in almost all of the baby products categories has been recorded. Cumulative growth in baby wear products (groups 6111 and 6209) was influenced by increased imports of textile from Asian countries (with domination of China). Imports of baby nipples and similar products (40149010) decreased by 20.4% to USD474 million (2003: USD595 million) which was due to the enormous growth in the previous year, at 57.8%. Diapers for babies and other hygienic paper products (481840) made up the largest component of total baby products imports with a share of 85.1%. Children diapers represent more than 2/3 of the imports of this product, valued at USD 75.0 million. Unfortunately, this subcategory has been separately monitored only for last two years and all records before 2004 are not available.

Asian countries (China and Thailand) together with neighbouring countries (Poland and Hungary) are the Czech Republic’s main suppliers of baby wear. China the leading supplier provided more than one third of total imports in 2004 valued at USD 3.3 million. Followed by Poland, with 25.1% share of its total imports of knitted garments and 14.4% of non-knitted garments valued at USD1.6 million and USD 0.5 million, respectively. Imports from India and Turkey increased due to the cheap labour costs and this scenario is expected to continue in the future. The position of developed European countries is slightly declining with exception of Germany, which is the main trading partner of the Czech Republic due to close historical relations. Malaysia ranked the 18th supplier of baby cloths, contributed to 0.4% of Czech Republic’s total imports. In value terms, imports of baby garments from Malaysia decreased to USD26 thousand in 2004 (2003: USD47 thousand) and not knitted dropped to USD6 thousand (2003: USD7 thousand), during the same period. Other ASEAN competitors were Indonesia and Thailand and was ranked 11th supplier with 1.7% share as source of imports, while Thailand ranked 4th with 6.1% share, respectively.

Imports of baby carriages and push chairs are growing constantly. China and Hong Kong are strengthening their position on the Czech Republic’s market. China was the leading supplier of these products which contributed 35% to total imports valued at USD2.72 million. China positioned itself ahead of Poland, which was the traditionally leading source of imports of these products to the Czech Republic. Increase in imports was also recorded from South European countries (Italy, Spain and Portugal). Imports from the Netherlands have declined due to the increasing labour and production costs. There are no records of Czech Republic’s imports of baby carriages and push chairs from Malaysia. Other Asian countries, Taiwan, India and Japan are slowly strengthening their position, although their share is small.

Due to the sufficient domestic production, the imports of baby nipples and similar rubber products are smaller, compared to the other baby products categories. The main suppliers are Germany with almost 40% of total imports and China with a share of 25%. Despite the fact, that both countries are maintaining their leading position, the total imports have declined to 20% in 2004. Imports from Malaysia are insignificant, however, Malaysia kept the 21st position in this market. Ahead of Malaysia were only Thailand with a share of 4.9% and Taiwan with 2.5%. Similar to imports, the exports of baby products have been continuously growing to USD180.7 million in 2004, although the development in individual categories varied. The biggest shares of the exports belong to the product group Diapers for babies and other hygienic paper products (481840). More than 80% direct exports within this category are generated by baby diapers itself. This category together with Baby nipples, comforters and similar rubber products for babies (40149010) also records positive results in trade balance and continuous growth. On contrary, exports of baby textile products and baby carriages declined. This negative development is connected with the increase of imports and closing down of many Czech textile manufacturers due to the growing competition from Asian countries.

Supermarkets and hypermarkets dominate the market with baby products in the Czech Republic. Drugstores, pharmacies and independent retailers accounted for a little over 37% of the market in value terms. The growing presence of foreign companies and their products also reflected the changing structure of retail distribution. Modern marketing techniques with increased brand advertising had a
10
marked influence on consumer purchasing habits, although many still prefer to shop locally. Supermarkets/Hypermarkets accounted for over 49% of all sales’ turnover and thus they are the primary distribution channel for baby products. Reason for increasing popularity is a wide range of products and effective price promotions. Among the most popular supermarkets/hypermarkets are Tesco, Globus, Hypernova, Interspar and Carrefour, although the last mentioned will move out from the Czech Republic due to a keen competition. Pharmacy and drugstores remained important distribution outlets, accounting for 27% of retail sales. Their strong points are convenient location in the easily accessible locations and convenient opening hours. The number of drugstores is increasing due to the opening new outlets of foreign drugstores chains. Examples of drugstores are Droxi, Dm-drogerie, Rossmann and Family. Independent retailers have lost its market as the popularity of supermarkets and hypermarkets increased. Despite the fact that their market share is just 10% in terms of value, they remained an important link especially for baby garments and clothing. Still high percentage of this category is taken by second hand stores. Convenience stores remain popular as a last resort outlet or for people with no means of personal transport to get to hypermarkets. They are usually located in the centres of urban areas and on the villages. Discounters started gaining more importance in distribution of baby diapers due to a favourable price. Examples of discounters are Penny market, Plus Discont, Flop. Other ways of distribution include internet shopping, which has increasing popularity especially for baby garments.

Czech women prefer to buy quality baby products even if this entails paying a higher price. Given to the fact, that women are having children in older age, young families have higher disposable income and thus they are willing to spend more on the high quality products. Very popular are internationally produced products, which are approximately 30% more expensive than domestic products. The Czech baby products market offers a comprehensive range of prices to meet the needs of various buyers with different purchasing power and taste. The average pricing of different product categories is provided below. i. The prices for baby garments start with CZK 160 for baby jumpsuit till CZK 900 for winter overalls. - Despite the decreasing market share, the second hand stores are still very popular for baby garments. The average prices for baby garments are only slightly lower than prices in hyper/supermarkets, however, the range of goods is wider.

Assessment, Prospects & Suggestions For Malaysian Exporters
Over the years, there had been a marginal increase in demand for baby products mainly due to the lack in market supply. Due to the inadequate competition on this market, the prices of baby products are still slightly higher or comparative with prices in other Western European countries, although the purchasing power in the Czech Republic is three times lower. However, the purchasing power is constantly growing. Czech Republic is at par to Greece and Portugal and it is predicted that within 10 years the purchasing power in the Czech Republic would reach the average level of the European Union. Considering the fact, that number of new born babies has an increasing tendency, the Czech Republic draws attention of baby product manufacturers. In order to maintain the trend of increasing birth rate, the government tables the bill on the enhancement of baby allowances as well as birth grants. Passing the bill would support young people in establishing families and having more than only one child. European countries, notably Germany, Poland and Italy together with the domestic manufacturers are main leaders of baby product market. As mentioned above the main competitive strength on the baby product market is not a low price factor but the quality of goods, that would meet the hygienic requirements together with properly advertising and promotion. Apart from China, Malaysian exporters are not facing any competition from other ASEAN countries, despite the strong community of Vietnamese. Although main activities of this community is also on the textile market, they focus on higher age
13
categories, since the quality of their goods does not meet strict hygienic norms and requirements for baby products. There are several prospects and recommendations for Malaysian exporters of products under this category. Familiarize with the current market situation, competitive products as well as with hygienic norms and regulations for baby products Start business proposals on a smaller scale, where both exporters and buyers could develop business confidence gradually
Build up stronger marketing promotion focused on importers as well as final consumers, which would enable to enter the market faster and easier. Than continue to strengthen the position on the market. Participate in international baby products trade fairs and meet potential clients in person. Entry to the baby product market should be done as soon as possible, while the positive trend of childbirth increase continues.
