Problems and difficulties and adversity and obstacles make you stronger
by Kent Spoerlein | on February 11, 2013

I’ve found myself thinking lately about “problems”.

How’s THAT for a topic?

Some days just seem to have more of them than others…and it’s easy to fall into the trap of wishing a
few of them would visit another doorstep instead of mine.

Ever feel that way?

Wouldn’t life be grand if everything just went your way?

Think about it.

No problems, no difficulties, no obstacles, no disappointments…every day, everything just falls neatly
into place and your life runs like a well-oiled machine. The sun always shines…but it’s not TOO hot
and you NEVER get sunburned – oh no – and you never get a flat tire and your grass is always
perfect and somehow never needs cutting.

Oh – and you NEVER have a “bad hair day” or a blemish or inexplicably gain a couple pounds…and
your car is always clean.

Every sales call results in a sale and every investment is a home run and every bet at the roulette
table of life is a winner!

Would you really like that kind of life?

I know there are days – or at least moments – when what I’ve outlined sounds pretty appealing, but
the truth is if you lived that kind of life you would become the weakest, least effective person you
could ever imagine.

If you never have a challenge or an obstacle to your success – at anything – you never develop any
strength. You are weak and you stay weak and you get even weaker the longer this situation persists.

To become strong, to become really successful, you must be tested. You must conquer adversity,
solve challenges, work through problems, persevere and solve your difficulties the old-fashioned way
– sometimes by nothing more than trial-and-error. It might not be easy and parts of it might not be fun
but that’s the price you pay to make it to the top. It will not be handed to you – you’ve got to TAKE IT!

So I’ve come to the conclusion that the situations and challenges I face (and you too) are actually a
GOOD thing – even though they may not seem to be at the moment they present themselves.

Working through these little “bumps in the road” make us stronger and more resilient (tending to
recover from or adjust easily to misfortune or change) and ultimately will make us more successful.

So don’t let what you used to think of as “problems” get you down. They are really a blessing in
disguise to help propel you to the top.

If you have to start small and work your way up, go for it!

If your plans do not work out exactly as you envisioned, welcome to the club. Make some
adjustments based on your experiences and do it again!

Virtually NOTHING works the first time you try something – remember learning to ride a bike? I know
you don’t remember learning to walk, but – trust me – you fell a lot more than once.

And now you can walk. What would your life be like if you gave up when you fell and said…”I just
don’t think this walking is for me”?

Do it, adjust, do it again, adjust…just do it.

Just do it.

They’re not really problems after all…
