According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ job report, 155,000 jobs were added in December,
with strong hiring in construction as a result of post-Sandy rebuilding efforts. Growth in the

Pasadena, CA (PRWEB) January 05, 2013 -- The U.S. economy added 155,000 jobs in December, according to
the Bureau of Labor Statistics report released Friday. The construction industry continued to show momentum,
with 30,000 construction jobs added in December, mirroring robust hiring trends on job site

The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ December job report showed steady gains in employment for the month of
December, with 155,000 jobs added in the private sectors and the unemployment rate remaining unchanged at
7.8 percent. While December hiring fell short of the levels needed to bring the unemployment rate down, the
latest BLS figures show that employment remained stable even in the face of last-minute budget negotiations in
Congress, which were not resolved until after New Year’s. Despite anticipation that uncertainty over tax
increases and spending cuts would cause employers to hold off on hiring, strong employment numbers for
December indicate that the fiscal cliff talks did not adversely affect hiring.

Momentum continues in the construction sector, with 30,000 jobs added in December, the most in 15 months.
These gains are a result of a much-needed boost from Hurricane Sandy, which devastated much of the
Northeastern U.S. in October and has spurred construction and rebuilding activity. In the weeks immediately
following, construction work was mostly concentrated on emergency repairs to roads, bridges, and critical
infrastructure. As insurance companies continue to process claims from Sandy victims, construction firms are
now being inundated with work on homes and buildings damaged by the flooding, such as roof patching and
restoration of flooded floors and basements. With insurance claims still being processed and billions more in
federal aid expected to come in, construction firms can expect to receive steady work in the coming months as
part of the post-Sandy recovery.

The BLS employment figures mirror hiring data on ConstructionCrossing.com, a leading jobs site for
construction jobs. Jobs data on the site indicate that in spite of market contraction for most 2012, demand
picked up towards the end of the year, giving the industry considerable momentum going into the new year. In
particular, hiring has been strong at the managerial levels. As of January 4, the site listed nearly 2,300 jobs for
construction managers and over 600 jobs for construction superintendents. Another area where demand has
been strong has been for construction estimators. With 945 openings currently listed, increased client requests
for project estimates is another positive sign that construction and home building efforts are picking up.
