Art Elements and Principles of Design

• Understanding the art elements and
principles of design will help you to
take better photographs and give you a
  common vocabulary for looking at
  photographs and discussing what you
  see with other people.
Art Elements and Principles of Design

Line - a continuous mark made on a
surface by a moving point … lines may
also be implied, such as the edge of a
shape or form.
Shape - an enclosed 2D configuration that
has height and width.
Art Elements and Principles of Design

• above, lines can be seen that outline shapes … spoke-like lines can be
found moving out from the center of the mushroom … some lines are
implied and show the outside edges of the mushroom shapes
• some geometric shapes have recognizable names such as ovals …
others without names are called organic shapes
Art Elements and Principles of Design

• form - a 3D configuration that has
height, width and depth … forms also
enclose volume … cones, cubes and
  spheres are examples
• space - the distance or area between,
  around, above, below or within
objects… space can be described as 3D
  or positive/negative
Art Elements and Principles of Design

• a 3D object, like a building that is not flat, can be walked around or
through and viewed from many different angles … this example,
although a 2D photograph, demonstrates form and space
Art Elements and Principles of Design

• texture - the surface quality or “feel” of an
object … texture is the way an object feels
(tactile) or looks like it would feel (visual)

• value - the lightness and darkness found in a
work of art from white to black and the
  range of grays in between
Art Elements and Principles of Design

• value can be seen by different areas of white, black and grays.
• although it is a 2D photograph, the rough appearance of the various
wood and metal surfaces show visual texture
Art Elements and Principles of Design

• color - has hue or chroma which is the
color’s name (ex. red, blue, yellow):
intensity which is the strength of the
color (ex. bright red or dull orange):
and value which is the lightness or
darkness of a color (ex. tint or shade)

Art Elements and Principles of Design

• balance - creates a feeling of stability in a
piece of art … balance can be symmetrical
  or asymmetrical

• contrast - the comparison of lights and darks
  found in a composition
Art Elements and Principles of Design

• if an imaginary line was drawn vertically through the center of this photo, it
would have an even amount of values and shapes on both sides … contrast can
be seen by comparing the black background with the white mountain
Art Elements and Principles of Design
• emphasis - a way of combining art elements
to stress the differences between those
elements … emphasis can create one or
  more centers of interest
• variety - a way of combining art elements
into diverse ways to form complex
relationships within a composition … using
different types of art elements together
Art Elements and Principles of Design

• emphasis is created when your eye is draw toward the large lens of the
camera… variety of shape is shown with the juxtaposition of
geometric shapes found in the camera and organic shapes found on the
  person
Art Elements and Principles of Design

• unity - a way of combining art elements to
accent their similarities and bind the picture
into a whole … unity is often achieved
through the use of repetition and simplicity

• rhythm - a way of combing art elements
using repetition to produce the look and feel
  of movement or pattern
Art Elements and Principles of Design

• repetition of twisted lines creates unity while rhythm is established as
the eye detects a sense of movement and pattern
Art Elements and Principles of Design

• movement - a way of combining art
elements to create a look of action or cause
a viewer’s eye to follow a path and sweep
  across the composition
Art Elements and Principles of Design

• the photo’s movement causes the viewer’s eyes to follow the ripples in
the sand and sweep toward the landforms in the middle ground
Art Elements and Principles of Design

• a good photograph should have several art elements and principles of
design that work well together … find as many as you can in the
  following examples…
