An Introduction to the Association of Junior Leagues International
The Association of Junior Leagues International Inc. exists to add value to the Junior Leagues and to aid in the fulfillment of their
Mission. But where did it all begin? And how does AJLI work to enhance the Junior Leagues?
In 1901 Mary Harriman founded the first Junior League, the Junior League of the City of New York. The Junior League movement
spread and in 1921, the Association of Junior Leagues of America “consolidated the little group of local societies into a national
organization that doubled its size, power and potentiality in ten years.” Today, close to 170,000 women in 293 Junior Leagues in
Canada, Mexico, the United States and the United Kingdom share the mission of promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of
women and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.
The 19 members of AJLI’s Board of Directors are all Active or Sustaining members of the Junior Leagues in their communities and
serve three-year terms. They govern on behalf of the whole organization, no matter which geographic area they represent, assuring
the viability of the Junior League movement. The Board’s overarching goals are to ensure that Junior Leagues effectively fulfill the
Mission and the Junior League flourishes. The Board accomplishes this by guiding the strategy of the Association, linking with
Leagues to ensure they reflect the needs and interests of the Leagues, and monitoring and providing oversight of AJLI headquarters
through Executive Director, Susan Danish.
Susan and the AJLI staff in New York provide services and resources to Junior Leagues by phone, through the AJLI website and
through League visits. They also organize and provide training to League leaders at four Organizational Development Institutes
(ODIs) and three major conferences, as well as training at regional meetings organized by local Leagues. The AJLI headquarters
moved to 80 Maiden Lane in New York City in September, 2006.
AJLI’s Nominating Committee members, who serve two-year terms, nominate candidates for the Board of Directors and Nominating
Committee. Positions are open to any Active or Sustaining member in good standing in her League.
For more information, please visit the AJLI website at www.ajli.org.

Mini-Market 2006
It’s time to do some holiday shopping! This year’s fall Mini-Market in-league fundraiser will be held in the West Hall of the Von Braun
Civic Center Monday, November 6, from 5:30p.m. until the start of the JLH General Meeting at 7:00p.m. The Mini-Market will
resume for a brief period following the close of the meeting at 8:00p.m. Please, note if you are planning on getting some holiday
shopping out of the way…try to come right at 5:30p.m. We are going to have a great group of vendors who will be bringing fabulous
products for you to buy for yourself or as gifts for others!
If there are any league members who are interested in having a booth during Mini-Market…it is not too late!!! This would be a
great way to introduce your specialty items or service to the league. Please contact Lucy Watson or Ashley Mitchell for additional
information.

“You’re Not The Boss of ME! . . . or are you?”
Many people have asked me, “Who’s in charge of the Junior League?” It’s a good question because it
can be a confusing one if you’re a new member of the League. The short answer is YOU! You are the
boss.

The Huntsville Junior League changed its board structure in 1999 to a council system. The council
system reduced the number of board members by HALF! This change freed up leadership so committee
chairs could focus on their duties and the Board could focus on larger policy issues.

Another purpose of the council system was to bring the power back to the people! Committee members
are encouraged to bring forward and implement ideas they want to see supported by the League. There
are 6 councils that make up the system. Every committee member is assigned a council. Information
from the committee meetings flows to the council meetings, and then forward to the board meetings. It
seems technical but is really pretty simple. Make sure to speak up and tell someone in charge if you
have an idea or have a question. Check the attached chart out to see which committee you are assigned.

Are You Eligible to Become an Officer OR a Member of Nominating/Placement Committee?
To be eligible you must have been an ACTIVE member of the Junior League Huntsville for the past two years. Your provisional year does not apply. Those
on leave of absence at any time during the past two years are not eligible. If you are eligible, your name should be on the Leadership Pool, which is on the
next page. PLEASE review the list for any changes that need to be made, such as names that have been left off or names that should not be listed. Please
contact Wendy Tucker, Nominating Chair, at 536-9746 or wtucker@knology.net for any changes.
Before We Slate Officers for the 2007-2008 Board, We Need Your Help!!! Fill out your Leadership Indicator!
Who do you think would serve the League well in an Officer position? Use the Leadership Indicator to tell us. (Check the following list of people on the
Leadership Pool to make sure they are eligible.) Do you want to be in a leadership position? Please tell us now!!! Don’t forget your Placement Advisor is
always there to help you. She is only a phone call or e-mail away!
Nominating / Placement Committee Election Ballot is Coming in November.
Members of our committee are elected by YOU, the general membership to serve as your representatives in choosing our leadership. This process begins
at the November General Meeting. It is conducted around the same time frame as officer selections and the SAME people are eligible (See the Leadership
Pool). So…don’t get the two confused!!! You have an opportunity to give your feedback on officers, but you “elect” the Nominating/Placement committee.
But remember, if you’d rather see someone on the Nominating/Placement committee, don’t include them on you Leadership Indicator – the ballot
for Nominating/Placement committee will come out at the November meeting.
***Please Remember – Provisionals do not participate in the Leadership Indicator or vote for Nominating/Placement.

Membership Survey: Leadership Indicator
