Position Title: Assistant Director of Service-Learning & Elon Volunteers

SUMMARY OF POSITION
Responsible for the oversight of major components of the Elon Volunteers! program; the Service Learning
Community; the PreSERVE summer program; assisting with the North Carolina Campus Compact learning
institutes and conferences; liaison to student service organizations under the Elon Volunteers! umbrella; supervises
America Reads program, assists with communications regarding departmental programs and events; and supervises
two student interns.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Elon Volunteers!: EV! is the umbrella organization which is run by student-volunteers and coordinates and
facilitates service experiences for the Elon student body. The organization consists of youth programs, advocacy
programs, service events and service organizations. The Assistant Director oversees the recruitment, hiring,
training, evaluation and leadership development of the 50 student Elon Volunteers! staff as well as working with
other campus student organizations on their involvement in service. Develops plan for new and creative methods
of recruiting volunteers. Oversees publicity, marketing and public relations for all programs. Also coordinates EV!
advisory board. Oversees student management of $7000 program budget.
Service Learning Community: Recruits students to this living-learning community and provides direct oversight to
this program. Includes selection, training and supervision of the Student Director of the Service Learning
Community and the Service Learning Mentors. Works with faculty teaching Service-Learning courses for the
community. Manages program budget of $3,800.
PreSERVE: Coordinates the week-long summer service program for incoming first-year students, including
recruiting participants, facilitators, and advisor.
Assists the executive director of North Carolina Campus Compact with fall and spring state conferences when held
on Elon’s campus.
Provides direction and oversight to eight service organizations (Habitat, SafeRides, Sierra Club, Alpha Phi Omega,
Epsilon Sigma Alpha, Circle K, SHINE, Rotaract) operating under Elon Volunteers! umbrella. Responsible for
communication with non-service student organizations (Greek Life, Residence Life, Athletics) to increase diversity
of those students involved with service activities and ensure the efficient tracking of service hours in support of the
Elon Experiences Transcript.
America Reads program: assists with communications regarding departmental programs and events; and supervises
two student coordinators.
Serves in Student Life Administrator on Call rotation.
Supports divisional and departmental goals. Represent department at occasional conferences, overnight and

Other duties assigned by the Director of Service Learning and Elon Volunteers!
Direct supervision of student staff within areas of responsibility in Kernodle Center for Service Learning.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree in Higher Education or related field preferred and 1-3 years
experience in volunteer service and/or student personnel administration.
Ability to read, analyze and interpret most complex documents. Ability to define problems, collects data, establish
facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of surveys, reports and data, and provide
report/summaries. Ability to respond verbally and in writing to sensitive inquiries or complaints from
callers/visitors, parents and employees of the college. Ability to write speeches using original or innovative
techniques or style. Ability to make effective speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to a
variety of campus and community constituents.
Ability to apply computational skills, work with mathematical concepts such as frequency distributions and analysis
of variables, make accurate projections and administer and analyze budgets.
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, comprehend and interpret information, policies and
procedures, and draw valid conclusions.
Significant experience with PCs. Knowledge of and experience using Microsoft Office software, specifically
Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint. Experience with desktop publisher, web pages, and administrative software
such as Datatel software highly desirable.
OTHER SKILLS REQUIRED
Experience with staff selection and training; designing and presenting programs; working with students, parents,
agencies, and faculty in a higher education setting.
Limited lifting (10-15 pounds). Employee is regularly required to sit, reach, talk, and hear.
The noise level in the work environment is minimal. There are occasional increases in noise levels required at
student events or staff activities.
