NetSCOPE Mentor Program
Professional Requirements for Mentoring
• Valid South Carolina professional teaching
certificate
• Minimum of one year’s successful teaching
experience in South Carolina at the continuing-
contract level
• Current practitioner or employed in a South
Carolina public school system within the past five
years
• Demonstrated proficiency in the use of computer
technology

Criteria for Mentoring
• Model excellence in teaching
• Be “highly qualified”
• Demonstrate an ability to use empirically based practices and
scientifically valid research
• Exhibit high expectations for students
• Model effective classroom management utilizing positive behavior
interventions
• Engage in communication with parents and involve them in their
child’s education
• Commit to the time and effort needed to mentor next generation of
teachers
• Engage in ongoing professional development related to mentoring
NetSCOPE Mentor Program
Overview
• Early Field
– Working with WU students in freshman through junior year as they observe,
work with individuals and small groups, and conduct action research
– Requires knowledge of Teacher Education curriculum and assessments as well
as preservice teacher development
– Participate in formal mentor training through CERRA
• Internship
– Provide support for WU teacher candidate as a “junior faculty member” during
a year-long internship
– Willingness to engage in co-teaching and innovative practice
– Requires knowledge of Teacher Education curriculum and assessments as well
as preservice teacher development
– Participate in formal mentor training through CERRA
• Induction – Year 4
– Guide and coach beginning teachers through induction year and beyond
– Model leadership and continuous professional development
– Participate in formal mentor training through CERRA

Early Field Experiences
• Assist Winthrop Teacher Education majors with early
(freshman - junior) field experiences including:
– Observations;
– Working with individual learners; and
– Conducting action research
• Build a knowledge-base of Winthrop’s Teacher
Education curriculum.
• Invite and support observation of exemplary teaching
• Review and provide feedback on lesson/unit plans and
other instructional activities
• Provide opportunities to implement lessons and units
• Communicate with university supervisor

Internship Mentoring
• Engage in co-teaching with a year-long intern
– ELEM/ECED already started
– SPED/Middle Level starting fall 2012
– Secondary/K-12 starting fall 2013
• Provide orientation at the school
• Plan a program of development
• Review and provide feedback on lesson/unit plans
and other instructional activities
• Provide continuous feedback to the intern
regarding effectiveness

• Communicate with university supervisor
• Participate in midterm and final evaluations in
partnership with the university supervisor
• Assist candidate in developing instructional skills
aligned with ADEPT Performance Standards
• Participate in mentor and ADEPT training and other
scheduled professional development
• Be available to the intern before, during, and after
the school day

Induction through Year Four Mentoring
• Identify and respond to individual beginning teacher needs
• Provide orientation to local context
• Describe the role of the teacher in the professional learning
community
• Communicate the nature and scope of professional
responsibilities
• Guide beginning teacher through multiple sources of data
including classroom observations
• Model (or identify another teacher to model) effective
instructional practices requested by beginning teacher

Induction through Year Four (cont.)
• Engage with beginning teacher in conferencing,
journaling, and collaborative logs
• Assist in analysis of student work and designing student
assessments
• Use formative assessments to assist beginning teacher in
relation to the ADEPT Performance Standards
• Share strategies of working with diverse students and
other instructional challenges

Why Mentor?
• Provide school-based experiences teachers need along the
continuum of their preparation, from preservice to mastery
• Assist preservice and beginning teachers to improve the
quality of instruction through empirically-based practices
• Improve own practice by engaging in a collaborative
partnership
• Participate in professional preparation to further develop
knowledge, skills, and dispositions of effective mentors
• Collaborate with Winthrop faculty in field-based research
• Receive additional support and incentives from Winthrop
University and NetSCOPE
NetSCOPE Mentor Program
Application Process
1. Attend information session. Review PowerPoint for additional
information.
2. Communicate interest with principal. Principal supports faculty member
moving forward with application process or advises against participation.
3. Request recommendations from building administrator and school liaison
(or other designee if liaison not yet identified). Recommendations must be
submitted online.
4. Complete application and self-assessment then submit to NetSCOPE. All
materials must be submitted online.
5. Once materials have been submitted, applicant may be scheduled for an
interview with the school and Winthrop liaisons. As a mentor, expect
Winthrop students and staff to be engaged in your classroom. Classroom
observations of effective teaching practice will be conducted periodically.
