Description of Service
The trainee will be working with Consultant Psychiatrist Dr Durairaj who covers the
North Liverpool patch covering a population of approximately 275000 and 56 GP
The Liverpool community Learning Disability team has a wide range of clinicians
including Psychologists, speech therapists, occupational therapists, support workers,
physiotherapists and community nurses, including practitioners with special interest
in Dementia, Forensic issues and Behavioural Management.
There are a number of group homes for people with severe and profound disabilities
and mental illness.
Setting Where Work Carried Out
Most of the work will be carried out in the community where the trainee will assess
and follow up patients with learning disabilities and other developmental disorders.
Responsibilities of Trainee
Assess new patients and follow-up patients in twice a week outpatient clinics.
Assess and manage patients in a variety of community settings, including day
centres, residential facilities and their own homes, using a range of interventions
including medication, behavioural interventions, brief psychotherapy and
Attend the inpatient unit (STAR UNIT) twice a week to get exposure to the
management of inpatients with learning disabilities and actively involved in their
discharge planning. They will receive clinical supervision for these sessions from Dr.
Attend multidisciplinary care plan meetings for inpatients and outpatients.
Work within the principles of individual care planning under local guidelines of the
Care Programme Approach. This would include appropriate risk assessments.
You will be involved in diagnosing and management of patients with pervasive
developmental disorders, challenging behaviours, and ADHD in patients with LD.
You will learn to use appropriate psychological approaches in behavioural problems.
You will work closely with community teams, families and carers.
Do risk assessments and make multidisciplinary management plans.
Gain skills in Capacity assessments and appropriate use of the Mental Health Act.
Understand Safeguarding issues and Protection under Vulnerable Adult Policy.
Acquire knowledge of criminal justice system in relation to patients with LD.
You will work with MDTs in risk management, assessment of dangerousness, suicide
risk, self neglect and abuse.
You will also have opportunities to work with the Liverpool Asperger’s Team, which is
based at Olive Mount.
Educational Programme consists of weekly Higher Academic Training Programme in
Psychiatry of Learning Disability held on Tuesday afternoon where case conferences,
audit meetings and tutorials take place.
The trainee is also encouraged to attend North West regional LD meetings held for
half days twice a month, usually held at Hollins Park.
The trainee will also attend and contribute to the Postgraduate Teaching Programme
which takes place every Tuesday morning.
The trainee will be encouraged to participate in audits with the support of the

The trainee will receive a minimum of 1 hour per week protected supervision from the
Consultant and ongoing support.
