John Jurkovich Scholarship 2009-2010
Wells Fargo Bank Minnesota, N.A., as trustee of the John Jurkovich Scholarship Fund, is pleased to invite qualified UMD students to apply for a John Jurkovich Scholarship. These scholarships, ranging between $1,000 and $2,000, are awarded to students who: Are admitted to UMD Are majoring in Education Have been admitted to an Education program Intend to complete a degree in education at UMD Demonstrate financial need Have a record of academic excellence APPLICATION PROCESS Interested students must: Be admitted and enrolled as a full-time 3rd or 4th year student majoring in Education Complete this application Obtain a letter of recommendation from an Education professor Complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). **Note, Submission of the FAFSA is due March 31, 2009 ** Write a letter of application for a teaching position (see page 2) Provide a resume plus one or two additional artifacts that illustrate your qualifications or strengths as a teacher. Examples: Your philosophy of education, a sample lesson plan that you have created, or a summary of teaching evaluations from a class you have taught during one of your practicum experiences. APPLICATION DEADLINE AND SELECTION PROCESS Application deadline is February 16, 2009. FAFSA submission deadline is March 31, 2009. The Department of Education’s Scholarship Selection Committee will prescreen applications, forwarding the top applicants to the John Jurkovich Trust Scholarship Committee at Wells Fargo Minnesota Bank in Duluth, Minnesota. The committee will make the final selection and award amounts. Applicants will be notified no later than April 3, 2009.

On an attached sheet of paper, please describe your interest in pursuing a major in education. You are encouraged to tell us about yourself, your activities and experiences, and your longrange educational and career goals, particularly as they relate to your major in Education. Your letter should be written to a real or fictitious school search committee, applying for a teaching position in that school. You may choose the format for your letter, but it should address the following: Identify the position for which you are applying (describe details of position).
