Virginia Primary LITERACY Page: 1 of 1 School ALPHABET Issue: 1 Action Date: Jan 2011 Plan CONTEXT: In 2010 teachers undertook PD relating to ‘The Big 6 in Reading’; (oral language, phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, reading fluency and comprehension.) Several staff attended regional PD facilitated by Anne Bayetto, Lecturer Education, Flinders University. Anne strongly recommended learning the alphabet as an important addition to the ‘big 6’ and outlined the following aspects as important: Children need to learn the alphabet: capitals (name and sound) and lowercase (name and sound). They also need to learn which letters are vowels and which are consonants, alphabetical order and a range of fonts. Children need to be able to produce capital and lower case letters, know directionality and correct letter formation and develop automaticity of letter formation. Anne outlined clearly that the approach of teaching a letter a week, as some teachers have done, is much too slow. FOCUS FOR Actions Evidence/ outcomes IMPROVEMENT Teach recognition of names and sounds of lowercase letters Teach recognition of names and sounds of uppercase letters Teach vowels and consonants Alphabetical order Teach students to form correctly capital and lowercase letters Automaticity of alphabet formation Classroom differentiation: (Refer to individual student assessment to determine what students need to learn: class/ small groups) Classroom intervention for identified children: (Refer to individual student assessment to determine what students need to learn: small group/ individual) Undertake and document ongoing formative assessment
