Anaeho’omalu Loko i’a (Fish Pond)
In Hawaiian, Anaeho’omalu is made up of two words: Ana’e – Mullet or ray-finned
fish, and Ho’omalu – to take care of, or protect. Put together, these two words mean
protected mullet. In ancient times, prior and up to the reign of King Kamehameha,
our ancestors used loko i’a (fishponds) such as these to capture and grow fish. These
particular loko here at Anaeho’omalu were set aside for use only by the Ali’i, or the
ruling class in ancient Hawaii. This is why the fish here were protected. Only the Ali’i
were permitted to eat the fish from these ponds. By preserving the fishponds and
helping the saltwater fish to multiply, this was a true act of sustainability.
Come join our Nanea Kai beach boys on a walking tour around our ancient Hawaiian
Loko i’a. Learn the history of the ponds while you explore ancient Hawaiian home and
petroglyph sites. Tuesdays & Thursdays at 10am. Meet at Ocean Sports beach hut at

Why are the cats cared for?
Caring for the cats means we can group
them together (a colony), spay and
neuter them, keep them healthy and this
prevents population growth.
