On observing individuals communicating with each other, I observed the following non-verbal signals:
Facial expression like smile, frown etc. which express a variety of emotions.
Gestures which are the signs that are used in conveying explicit meanings like shrugging the
shoulders to say “I don’t know”
Body language and posture which depicts the likeness between the sender and the receiver. It
clearly demonstrates how much the receiver likes the message and views of the sender.
Personal space which communicates the amount of distance that both the party expect to
maintain between them.
Touch communicates the level of intimacy of the sender and the receiver.
Intonations like tone of the voice, pitch of the voice, the loudness which conveys arrogance,
fear, shyness etc.
Eye contact which explains the receiver’s focus on the sender.
Appearance, with regard to clothes and accessories, conveys information about the social
status, context and the individuality of the communicating person.
On undergoing this exercise, I became aware that these non-verbal signals are very vital part of the
communication and can both complement and complicate the verbal communication. I understood
that I should be cautious in sending non-verbal signals and also pay close attention to the signals sent
by the person communicating with me. I should maintain good eye contact with the sender to
emphasize that I have total focus on what is being conveyed. Also, I should concentrate on the
signals that could be misleading my message to the receiver.
