      I. C&I Announcements:

A C&I Committee members are asked to convey to their schools and
departments the necessity of marking all program changes on the latest
electronic catalog copy so that mistakes can be minimized. Program
changes will not be approved until this detail is provided.

              B. For curricular proposal guidelines, see the C&I Senate website at
              http://www.shepherd.edu/employees/senate/C&I/.

              C. Clarification of Modern Language requirement for BA programs
The catalog currently requires “12 semester hours (required for B.A. programs, except
education)” (page 45). Currently, History, Psychology, English, Music, and Mass
Communications (also has BS option) require modern languages, with Political Science’s B.S.
degree requiring language as well. Since West Virginia high school students are now required
by HEPC Series 23 to fulfill 2 units of modern language for graduation, many students coming
to Shepherd will test out of one or even possibly two of the required courses for the BA. Thus
servicing the Modern Language requirement is both feasible and prudent as a requirement for
the BA degree. Likewise, as Shepherd University, which has identified itself as a liberal arts
institution, embarks on global studies initiatives and new global studies programs, the modern
language component should and must continue to be a vibrant and important part of the
curriculum and Master Plan of the University.
M/S/P that C&I endorse the traditional Modern Language requirement for the BA degree, as
noted with clarification in the current catalog, including listing the requirement after each
appropriate major and a general statement concerning the requirement in the front of
the catalog. Accepted and Approved with 8 - YES votes and 1 - NO vote.

        D. The following program changes will go before the BOG for approval:
