· Heli-Skiing Operation to Open in Lake Tahoe Long
absent from the Sierra Nevadas, heli-skiing returns to Lake
Tahoe after a nearly forty-year absence. W e spoke to the
owner of the newly opened Pacific Crest Heli-Guides about
filling the void. The heli-deprived residents of Lake Tahoe
can finally rejoice… and start saving. Pacific Crest
Heli-Guides in partnership with HeliTahoe have announced
plans to operate a full-fledged heli-skiing operation
accessing over 100,000 skiable acres along the spine of
the Pacific Crest beginning Decem ber 15. Outside of a few
unsuccessful heli-skiing enterprises in the early 1970's,
m uch of Tahoe's potential heli-accessed terrain has
rem ained untouched for alm ost four decades.
The American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation (ABSF)
announced that it is currently seeking grant applications
for young skier program s associated with schools and
cross-country ski organizations throughout the country.
"The m ission of the Foundation is to prom ote cross-country
skiing as a fun, energetic activity that is part of an active
and healthy lifestyle," said Executive Director Ned
Zuelsdorff. "A significant portion of our effort focuses on
young skiers. To this end the Foundation annually provides
grant funding to young skier program s. Zuelsdorff said the
ABSF will award a total of $15,000 in grants with up to
$1,000 being awarded to each organization selected. He
said grant applications from youth cross-country ski
program s throughout the country are welcom ed. Priorities
for ABSF funding include, but are not lim ited to the creation
or expansion of young skier program s and first tim e
applicants. Zuelsdorff said the Young Skier Developm ent
Grant application is available here. Grant applications are
due in the Am erican Birkebeiner office by Friday, October
1, 2010. The ABSF Skier Developm ent Com m ittee will
review all applications received by the deadline and
