					Monkey’s Paw Literary Elements
Plot
Defined: The sequence of events in a literary work.
Components:
   1. Exposition
   2. Inciting incident
   3. Rising action
   4. Climax
   5. Falling action
   6. Denouement - resolution
Plot
 Exposition: introduces setting, characters and the
 basic situation

 Inciting Incident: introduces the conflict


 Rising action: events leading to the climax


 Climax: the high point of interest or suspense
Plot
 Falling action: characters recovering from climax


 Denouement: resolution where the conflict is
 solved
Somebody Wanted But So
 Essentially, a plot summary can be broken into
 these parts:

   Somebody: characters, usually protagonist
   Wanted: what they want to do
   But: conflict! Antagonist enters
   So: what happens after the antagonist and
   protagonist face off and how the conflict is
   solved

Foreshadowing
Defined: use of clues in a literary work to suggest events
 that have yet to occur. Creates suspense, builds tension
 and causes reader to wonder about what will happen
 next.

 foreshadowing is used in “The Monkey’s Paw” to
  build tension throughout the rising action and
  climax.
   Be on the lookout for clues!
Cause and Effect
 Effect: what happened
 Cause: the reason something happens


 Examples:
   Light switch
   Forgot to get gas in my car
   Didn’t turn in my homework
   Forgot to look both ways

 Look for instances of foreshadowing
