Penfield Central School District Scribner Road Summer Reading Suggestions Mrs. Susan Chauncey, Teacher/Librarian June 2009 Easy Readers Bones and the Dog Gone Mystery* - David Adler. While looking for his lost magnifying glass in the park, young Detective Jeffrey Bones and his grandfather discover that Curly the detective dog is missing, too, and start tracking down clues. Shoo, Fly Guy!* – Tedd Arnold. A pet fly searches for his favorite brown, oozy, lumpy, smelly food. Meet Mr. and Mrs. Green* - Keith Baker. A loving alligator couple enjoy going camping, eating pancakes, and visiting the county fair. Little Rat Makes Music*- Monika Bang-Campbell. Little Rat loves the violin but hates to practice, until her teacher suggests she perform a duet with one of the advanced students at the holiday concert. Pish and Posh*- Barbara Bottner. Pish and Posh’s discovery of fairy magic, leads to a series of wacky surprises. Cork and Fuzz* – Don Chaconas. The friendship between Cork, a muskrat, and Fuzz, a possum, is in trouble when Cork decides that since he is older, he has to be taller than Fuzz. Sam and the Firefly – P. D. Eastman. Sam the owl and Gus the firefly have adventures and misadventures as they fill the night sky with words spelled with Gus’ light. Chicken Said “Cluck” – Judyann Grant. Chicken wants to help Earl and Pearl plant their pumpkins, but she only manages to get in the way, until grasshoppers invade the pumpkin patch and Chicken is the only one who can stop them. The Grandma Mix-Up – Emily Arnold McCully. Young Pip doesn’t know what to do when two very different grandmothers come to baby sit, each with her own way of doing things. Mr. Putter and Tabby Walk the Dog* – Cynthia Rylant. Mr. Putter and his cat, Tabby, agree to walk their neighbor’s dog, not knowing what they are in for. I am Invited to a Party* – Mo Willems. Gerald, the elephant, who "knows parties," gives his best friend, Piggie, advice for getting ready after Piggie receives her very first party invitation. Beginner Chapter Books Ivy and Bean* – Annie Barrows. When seven year old Bean plays a mean trick on her sister, she finds unexpected support for her antics from Ivy, the new neighbor, who is less boring than Bean first suspected. . Mercy Watson, Princess in Disguise* – Kate DiCamillo. Mercy, the pig, is in for a Halloween adventure when Mr. and Mrs. Watson dress her up as a princess and take her trick-or-treating. Down Girl and Sit* - Lucy Nolan. Recounts the adventures of a rambunctious dog who thinks her name is Down Girl and her next door neighbor, Sit, as they try to keep the world safe from dangerous squirrels, the paper boy, and a frightening creature named Here Kitty Kitty. Martin Bridge: Blazing Ahead* – Jessica Scott Kerrin. Martin has exciting adventures on a camping trip. Graphic Books Bad Kitty Gets a Bath – Nick Bruel. This companion book to Bad Kitty and Poor Puppy is a zany little graphic novel. Bad Kitty needs a bath? Uh, oh. Don’t you know CATS HATE BATHS? Includes fun facts, glossary, and other information. Babymouse: Puppy Love* – Jennifer L. Holm. Even though Babymouse doesn't have good luck when it comes to keeping pets, she decides to take in a stray dog and train it. Presented in graphic novel format. Diary of a Wimpy Kid* – Jeff Kinney. Greg and his best friend, Rowley, are undersized weaklings hoping just to survive sixth grade, but when Rowley grows more popular, Greg must take drastic measures to save their friendship. Gregor and his little- sister are pulled into a strange underground world, where they trigger an epic battle involving men, bats, rats, cockroaches, and spiders. Brendan Buckley’s Universe and Everything In It – Sundee T. Frazier. Brendan Buckley, a biracial tenyear-old, applies his scientific problem-solving ability and newfound interest in rocks and minerals to connect with his white grandfather, the president of Puyallup Rock Club, and to learn why he and Brendan’s mother are estranged. Found*- Margaret Peterson Haddix. When thirteenyear-olds Jonah and Chip, who are both adopted, learn they were discovered on a plane that appeared out of nowhere, full of babies with no adults on board, they realize that they have uncovered a mystery involving time travel and two opposing forces, each trying to repair the fabric of time. How to Steal a Dog – Barbara O’Connor. Desperate to help her family, Georgina creates an elaborate scheme to get money by stealing a dog and then claiming the reward that the owners are bound to offer. Becoming Naomi Leon – Pam Munoz Ryan. When Naomi’s absent mother resurfaces to claim her, Naomi runs away to Mexico with her greatgrandmother and younger brother in search of her father. The Invention of Hugo Cabret. – Brian Selznick. Amazing illustrations help to tell the story of Hugo, an orphan living in a Paris train station in 1931. The White Giraffe – Lauren St. John. After a fire kills her parents, eleven-year-old Martine must leave England to live with her grandmother on a wildlife game reserve in South Africa, where she befriends a mythical white giraffe. Listen – Stephanie Tolan. During her solitary convalescence from a crippling accident, twelveyear-old Charley finds a wild dog, and the arduous process of training him leads her to explore her feelings about her mother’s death two years earlier. Nonfiction Nic Bishop Spiders – Nic Bishop. Brilliant photographs this book of basic information about various kinds of spiders. All Stations! Distress!: April 15, 1912, The Day the Titanic Sank – Don Brown. The story of the most famous shipwreck in history. Women Daredevils : Thrills, Chills, and Frills – Julie Cummins. These true stories tell of fourteen women, who, during 1880 to 1929, performed feats of daring, from being shot out of a cannon to high-diving on horseback. Aliens Are Coming! The True Account of the 1938 War of the Worlds Radio Broadcast – Meghan McCarthy. Could a radio show make people believe that aliens landed in New Jersey? Books for Sharing - Picture Books A Good Day – Kevin Henkes. A bird, a fox, a dog, and a squirrel overcome minor setbacks to have a very good day. You Read to Me, I’ll Read to You* – Mary Ann Hoberman. These very short stories about friends, family, and pets are written for two voices – perfect for an adult to read with a child. Cookies: Bite-Size Life Lessons – Amy Krouse Rosenthal. In the process of baking cookies together, a crew of young children and friendly animals learn the meanings of 24 important words, such as patient, polite, honest, and even courageous. Have You Filled Your Bucket Today?: A Guide to Daily Happiness For Kids – Carol McCloud. The concept of bucket filling is an effective metaphor for encouraging kind and considerate behavior and for teaching the benefits of positive relationships. Great Fuzz Frenzy – Janet Stevens and Susan Stevens Crummel. When a tennis ball lands in a prairie dog town, the residents find that their newfound frenzy for fuzz creates a fiasco. Knuffle Bunny Too: A Case of Mistaken Identity – Mo Willems. Trixie's first day of pre-kindergarten gets off to a bad start when she and Sonja discover they have the same toy bunnies. Books for Sharing - Chapter Books Seven Wonders of Sassafras Springs – Betty G. Birney. Eben searches his small town to see if he can find anything comparable to the real Seven Wonders of the World. Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane – Kate DiCamillo. Edward is a cold-hearted toy rabbit who loves only himself until he gets lost. The Jamie and Angus Stories* – Anne Fine. These six stories are about Angus, a toy bull, and Jamie, the boy who owns him. Clementine* – Sara Pennypacker. On Monday, Clementine starts out having a not-so-good week when she’s sent to the principal’s office for cutting off Margaret’s hair. Things get worse after that. Rules – Cynthia Lord. – Twelve-year-old Catherine describes the humor and heartbreak of life with an autistic brother Toys Go Out – Emily Jenkins. Enjoy the adventures of three best friends who happen to be toys. The 39 Clues* - Rick Riordan. What would happen if you discovered that your family was one of the most powerful in human history? Six Easy Ways To Get Your Kids To Read This Summer Children who read do better in school so make sure your child is a reader! 1. Get your child a library card at the Penfield Public Library and use it to borrow books. 2. Sign your child up for this year’s summer reading program at the Penfield Public Library. Kids will enjoy free programs with fun activities, storytelling, reading contests, crafts and more. 3. Read to your children every day. Take advantage of “waiting” time to share books: on trips, at the doctor’s office, in line at the grocery store. 4. Set a good example: read on your own and talk to your kids about what you’re reading. 5. Have books everywhere – in the car, in front of the TV, in the kitchen, on the porch. 6.
