ADAPTATIONS FOR A DISABILITY
WRITE A BEHAVIORAL OBJECTIVE FOR A YOUNG CHILD. The student will be able to wash his/her hands after eating each meal or after going to the bathroom with 4-6 trials daily for 12 weeks. DESCRIBE POSSIBLE ACTIVITIES TO GO WITH THE OBJECTIVE. HAND WASHING * One activity will be stand behind the child and physically prompt them, using verbal prompts as the child can become dependent on these. I will teach the child to use cold water only, because if not supervised he/she could try to wash their hands and the water could be hot and could burn them. * Another activity will be to have a laminate hand washing sequence at eye level above the sink to remind the child of the steps he/she needs to do, we could use photographs or pictures to motivate the child. This activity is called task analysis.
* Make a data sheet with the five steps with a row of small boxes next to each step. These boxes will be used to record success (+) or non-success (-) with each step. Date/time Turn on water Soap Wash hands Turn off water Dry hands
* Provide rewards to the student if he/she is able to do some or all of the steps independently.
* Another activity could be to show the student a video of how to wash his or her hands correctly. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-6oda3yNjs&feature=player_embedded#
CHOOSE A DISABILITY. WHAT SPECIFIC STRATEGIES WOULD YOU USE TO ADAPT THIS ACTIVITY?
HEARING LOSS (DISABILITY) *The activity will be explained to the child with me standing in front of him, instead of standing behind. The student will be placed close of the teacher and the sink. *The activity will be repeated verbally to the child if he/she does not understand. *The teacher will carefully check if the child is paying attention to the visual aids (task analysis). *During the video presentation the student will be placed near the TV for good visibility of the activity.
