A. Nilambur FDA:- Malabar Honey in Kerala
       NTFP collection is an important activity in the state. A large number of NTFPs are
being collected from the forests especially by the tribals. One of the important produce
collected by the tribals is honey to the extent of about 60,000- 70,000 kg/ year. Value
addition of this important produce has contributed to increase in revenue of the area under the
FDA. The Nilambur FDA, has branded its honey is “Malabar Honey”, which is being
marketed successfully. There are plans to introduce other brand name honey- ‘Nilambur
Honey’ in the future. Medicinal plants, collected in all the FDAs are sold to the
pharmaceutical companies or through their agents without processing, although there exists
potential for value addition activities for the same.




Elapeedika VSS (Kannur FDA), Kerala:- income generation activity
       Elapeedika VSS of Kannur FDA has become the nodal agency in facilitating the state
tribal development department for construction of houses for the tribals in the VSS area. It
also acts as nodal agency for the Kerala State Literacy Mission Authority by conducting adult
education classes for the elderly in the VSS area. The VSS organizes adventure trekking
through Nehru Yuva Kendras which is affiliated under the Women Development Corporation
for organizing training programmes for women. It is also affiliated under the Central Social
Welfare Board for conducting social education courses. The VSS also undertakes nursery
work for supplying seedlings of Casuarina, bamboo and Acacia auriculiformis to the contract
farmers of Hindustan Newsprints Ltd. The VSS also extends assistance in the form of
facilitation for micro-insurance to the members through the United India Insurance Co Ltd, in
