							How to Enjoy Extreme Metal
Many people think that extreme metal is something you either enjoy or you
don't and that it depends on the person but the truth is that it's
something you slowly get used to. Ask most people what they think of
extreme metal and they'll tell you it's just noise but a lot of metal
fans who evenwantto like extreme metal can't help but just hear a bunch
of noise, so what's going on? Extreme metal is something you get into
gradually, starting with the lighter stuff and working your way to the
heavier music.
<Steps
1Check out which metal bands are big at the moment and listen to some
tracks, avoid emo and hardcore songs but find something heavy with parts
that you genuinely enjoy. If you find a song that has a nice acoustic
part with a sweet solo but goes into some heavy riff that you don't like,
then listen to it for the acoustic part, but listen to the whole song
every time, rather than just skipping to your favorite parts.<
2If you know anybody that's into heavier metal, tell them what bands you
listen to at the moment and ask for recommendations, this is the best way
to do it since there is a huge amount of metal bands out there and
listening to each one is going to take a long time.
3Be aware of what level of heaviness you can handle. When you listen to a
new album you haven't heard before that's a little bit more heavy than
what you're used to, listen to the first few songs more than once.
Chances are you won't think it's so great the first time but after
listening to it a few times you'll be headbanging just like the rest of
us.
4Find some cool band merchandise that you like, t-shirts or baseball caps
that you think look cool and that have a heavy band's logo on it. If you
don't really like the band or only like them a little bit, just having
the shirt will make it more personal for you and you'll be more
enthusiastic listening to their albums.
5Look up some videos on YouTube of people doing covers of brutal metal
tunes, whether it be guitar, drums, vocals or bass. Watching videos of
people actually playing it will help you appreciate the complexity of the
music.
6If you start to get bored of metal, then that's actually a good thing,
it means you're ready to start listening to heavier bands.Neverget into
thinking that what you're listening to is the heaviest there is and that
you've pretty much heard it all, because few people really get to that
point. If you start to think like this then go back and find some albums
you've heard before that you thought were too heavy at the time (most
metal fans actually have a few albums that are too heavy for them to
handle) chances are you'll enjoy them this time round and wonder why the
hell you never liked them before!
7Don't judge people that aren't into extreme metal, remember than at some
point you didn't really like metal either so you should be able to
understand their views.<

Tips
Don't be afraid to head bang in public! Metal is about not caring what
people think about you and being comfortable with what you're about.
Don't force yourself toonlylisten to metalallthe time. Listening to other
genres will help you appreciate metal more and you'll realize that no
other genre really makes you feel the way metal does.
Some good bands to check out that kind of act like a "bridge" to extreme
metal are bands like Opeth, Lacuna Coil, Enslaved, Children of Bodom,
Chimaira, Fredrik Thordendal's special defects, Meshuggah, SlipKnot,
Kreator etc. the list goes on.
Find a website that gives you good recommendations like last.fm (formerly
audioscrobbler). You can type in any band name and it will give you
similar bands to listen to.
Listen to metal radio online, the FM radio channels like Kerrang are
rubbish and will give you a load of mainstream BS.

<Warnings
Being into metal doesn't necessarily mean you'll get along with metal
fans. A lot of extreme metal fans dislike anything that isn't heavy
enough for them. That's not what it means to be metal, that's what it
means to be close minded.
People that aren't into metal might disapprove of your taste and judge
you, if you meet somebody like this you know that they probably wouldn't
be a good friend so that saves you a lot of trouble. But if you come
across as respectable and in control, people might appreciate that you're
into something different.
