Project Summary: Flatback turtles are being satellite tracked as part of a larger
sea turtle research project associated with the development of
an offshore gas plant on Barrow Island.
Flatback turtles are being flipper tagged at both Barrow Isalnd
and Mundabullangana station to provide long term population
data for modelling and environmental monitoring purposes.
The satellite tracking program is providing information on the
location of interesting habitat and foraging grounds. which will
be used in environmental impact assessment and management
programs associated with the project.
In late 2005, a tagging team of 28 volunteers was organised,
spread over a 2 month period. The group helped to initiate this
project, which is the first ever saturation tagging program on
Flatback turtles.

Reports / Information material: The results will be published in a peer reviewed journal.
Planned activities: Flatback turtles will be tracked from Barrow Island over the
summer of 2005/2006.
Track additional flatback turtles in 2006/2007 when the new
generation GPS ptts have become available.
