Volume 52 Number 4
Looking forward….Would you like to be part of Essex County history?
Here is your chance—
The Presby Memorial Iris Gardens will be celebrating its 85th anniversary in 2012. If you have
been there you know what a beautiful spot it is here in our area. To kick off the anniversary year the curator and her
assistant will be coming to the Women’s Club of Glen Ridge next April to talk about these wonderful gardens and their
history. It is a very busy time for them, so we are very privileged to have them come start their season with us.
How can you be involved? The Home and Garden Committee thought it would be fun if those of us with an
artistic bent would go to the gardens this year and find inspiration in its beauty by creating an artistic rendering of your
emotions. What inspiration will turn you to paint a picture, take a photograph, perhaps write a poem? At our April 2012
meeting we will display your talented art work. It will be an inspiration for us all to be sure and attend the birthday
celebration the following month!
These nationally renowned Gardens are located at 474 Upper Mountain Avenue in Upper Montclair and the
anticipated bloom season is typically May 14 to June 5th. In case you are interested, they will be conducting a plant sale
this year on May 6th and 7th and on May 28th they will hold the annual family garden party. It is a gorgeous spot to enjoy a
lovely day whenever you can get there. We are so lucky to have this beautiful garden in our area—take advantage of this
neighboring garden and get into creating your artistic masterpiece to display next April. You can find out more about the
happenings at the gardens by going to their website, www.presbyirisgardens.org

Looking back…the Year in review.
This is the last Signpost issue for the current Club year, and what a year it has been! We’ve had book groups
and blood drives, cookie exchanges and crafter get-togethers, movie screenings and Music and More. We’ve had
Time for Tots and collected for Toys for Tots, created a haunted stage, welcomed ponies and petting zoos and
painted a pumpkin or two. We visited with Santa, decorated a gingerbread cookie and went sledding in our
indoor winter wonderland. We’ve learned about holiday wrapping, interior design ideas, the latest news from
the publishing circles, The Passion Play, the film A Small Act, Beads for Education, beer making and tasting,
and listened to some Swingtime music and Broadway tunes along the way. We’ve provided financial support
for women in Africa, gathered teen bands to raise funds for Haiti medical aid, and honored our patron Henry
Chapman. We’ve shared a cup of tea with our favorite girl and her favorite doll and we’ve stretched with yoga.
Before the year is over we will hear Glen Ridge history come alive, exhibit High School art work, donate our
old eyeglasses, and begin planning some trips and events for the coming fall.

President’s Post
It's hard to believe, but my first year as President has really flown by. For most of us, it has
seemed as though this winter would never end, but spring is finally here and the Club House is
no worse for wear! As guardians of this beautiful building, we held our breath as the snow fell,
ice formed and thawed, and the rains came. As luck would have it, the roof did not suffer any
serious damage.
The severity of this winter has definitely taken its toll around town, both physically and in
spirit. Decorating and renovation projects have taken longer or been put on hold. For the first
time in over a decade, we will not hold our Annual House Tour in May. Even with the valiant
efforts of the Ways & Means Committee, we have not been able to find enough
homeowners "ready" to open their doors. We sincerely hope to re-instate the House Tour next
year.
The House Tour is our most significant fund raiser and the one time each year that we call upon
all of our membership to participate in some way. The Women's Club is a non-profit, charitable
organization, and we are dependent on fundraising as well as dues and the proceeds of our rental
business to keep the Club afloat. It is not only a labor of love that keeps the doors of this
beautiful building open. We do need to find ways to fill this gap in fundraising.
I am exploring a range of new fundraising activities with the Board and urge any member with a
concept to please reach out to me or any member of the Board.
Thank you all for your help this year. Please join us at our Annual Luncheon on Tuesday, May
10th as we celebrate our successes and welcome the new Board members.

A TOWN IS BORN
GLEN RIDGE HISTORY COMES TO LIFE
AT THE DRAMA DEPARTMENT OPEN HOUSE – TUESDAY, APRIL 5 AT 1:00PM
LUNCHEON AT 11:45AM
Back in the second half of the 19th century
when cows roamed through our town and
sometimes nibbled at people’s gardens,
the talk of secession filled the air. But the
secession being talked about had nothing
to do with the Confederacy or the Civil
War. It was about Glen Ridge’s desire to
secede from Bloomfield, which it
ultimately did in 1895.
On Tuesday, April 5th at 1:00 pm, the
Drama Department in conjunction with the
Gas Lamp Players will present a dramatic
and personal perspective on the history of
Glen Ridge. Using text from residents’
actual diaries and letters written between
1860 and 1895, the actors create an intimate picture of what life had been like in our town.
This fascinating material from the Glen Ridge Historical Society’s collection was adapted and
directed by Jessica Sporn and stars Greg Cancro, Lyn Hanson, Daniel Shaw, David Shaw, and
Sharon Smolen. Town historian, Sally Meyer, is excited to be able to accompany this show
with photographs that are also from the Society’s collection.
This program is free to members of the Women’s Club of Glen
Ridge or members of the Glen Ridge Historical Society.
Non-members attending only the program will be charged $5 at
the door.
DELICIOUS LUNCHEON CATERED BY T.S.MA
Advance reservations are required for this sumptuous, gourmet
Chinese buffet that will be offered at 11:45AM. The luncheon is
$18 for members. Non-members should pre-pay $23 for a
combination of the luncheon and program.

The past couple of months have been great for the Girls’ Club! We have continued our joint project with
the Sportsmen’s Service League in helping the St. John’s Soup Kitchen in Newark. During our February
meeting, the members made 300 personal valentines for the Van Dyk nursing home in Montclair. Later in the
month the club visited the nursing home and delivered them to the residents. Both the residents and the girls
enjoyed the experience!

Finance Update
It’s hard to believe, (I know, I say this every year), but we are fast approaching the
end of our fiscal year in April 2011, and I wanted to give you an update of how we
are doing financially. Once again our bottom line is healthy, but this is due primarily to our
rental business. While our membership numbers have remained steady and most of our events
and fund raisers were well attended, the number of tickets sold to events was a bit lower than last
year, and our costs of holding these events were higher.
As you may know, in order to meet the expenses of maintaining our Clubhouse and being able to
offer the wide variety of programming throughout the year, we need to rent our clubhouse on
weekends for non-club related events. These are primarily weddings and bar/bat mitzvahs. This
allows us to offer our membership a variety of activities throughout the year either free or at a
nominal fee. I did a quick count and found that we will have utilized our Clubhouse for slightly
more than 175 different events or meetings this year. These included four book groups, Girls’
Club meetings and events, department programs and luncheons, fund raisers, children events,
musical concerts, scout meetings, yoga classes, time for tots, blood drives and Board and Finance
meetings just to name a few.
The rental business is so important to us because we do not generate sufficient income by
ourselves to support the overheads associated with having our clubhouse. This year, the rental
income not only supported our use of the Clubhouse, but allowed the House Committee to
renovate the ladies rooms on both the 1st and 2nd floor. That completes the renovation of all of our
restrooms in our Clubhouse as well as the addition of a handicapped accessible unisex restroom
on the 1st floor.

“A drawing is simply a line going for a walk.” -- Paul Klee
What a great way to think about a drawing! Simply taking your pencil and allowing it to prance across the
page, fancy free! Letting your pencil loosely roll around in your hand, having a mind of it’s own. Then when
you are finished with all that fun, stepping back and looking at your pencil drawing work of art. A masterpiece

A Tour of the Culinary Institute of America
Leaf peepers and leaf eaters – Please join us for a Glen Ridge Road Trip to The
Culinary Institute of America and enjoy a delicious gourmet lunch at Hyde
Park. Please note, although the trip is scheduled for October 12th, we need to
reserve by April 15th.
Visit The Culinary Institute of America during the height of Leaf-peeping season for a
fabulous lunch in the St. Andrew’s Café. Experience innovative food in this award-winning
Café that exemplifies the best of the farm-to-table movement and is proud to be a Certified
Green Restaurant. The a la carte menu highlights locally and sustainably sourced
ingredients prepared using both American and European culinary traditions. What a
great place to experience the bounty of New York’s harvest. A cost estimate for lunch is
$30.00.
We will have time to shop in the well-appointed gift shop as well as enjoy breath-taking
views of the Hudson River. If we have 20 or more interested people, we can arrange for a
private tour of parts of the school.
Our trip is planned for Wednesday, October 12th, 2011. We will meet at the Clubhouse at
9:45AM to Hyde Park, NY, with a return approximately 5:00PM. As you can imagine, we
need advance reservations for this very busy season, so please reserve by notifying our
office and sending in a $10.00 deposit by April 15th.
The House and Garden Department is sponsoring this trip. If you have questions, call
Linda Potter or Linda Woodbury.
