Business Advisory Board

Meeting was called to order at 8:07 a.m. by Garry Aloia.
Anna Rominger welcomed everyone to the meeting and thanked everyone for coming to the Speaker’s
Discussion of New Members
Anna Rominger commented that we have two individuals who are interested in becoming members of
our Business Advisory Board. Brief introduction of new members followed. David Stephenson,
President of Horizon Bank, has bought a table for the last several years at our speaker’s series luncheon.
Garry Aloia commented that he has a fine reputation. Motion to approve David as a member of the
Board. Motion passes unanimously.
Brett Jacob is a managing partner for Cormac Benefits Group. He is very interested in becoming a board
member, and is the son of the late Randy Jacobs. He worked for the Willis Group and graduated from IU
with a Business degree. Motion to approve Brett as a member of the Board. Motion passes
Discussion of Business Alliance Luncheon
Garry Aloia thanked everyone for their support and attendance at the luncheon. Brief discussion
followed. Garry asked for suggestions for improvement. Matt Dilts responded that advertising was
good and that attendance is always a consideration. Anna commented briefly on the attendance.
Discussion continued. Jim Percifield suggested going electronic. The Business Alliance will be taking a
good look at how we contact people for our future luncheons.
Anna Rominger reported that she has been working with Dr. Bala Arshanapalli on purchasing a
Bloomberg terminal for our trading floor. A comment was made as to whether we should consider using
the funds from the Speaker’s Series Luncheon to pay for half of the Bloomberg terminal. Garry has
spoken with Dr. Bala Arshanapalli about setting up a possible golf outing to help raise funds. If anyone
has suggestions for other ideas for helping to raise $20,000 for the terminal, please let him know. Mary
Stewart-Pellegrini asked about looking at different formats for speakers, ie. a panel. Discussion
followed. Jim Percifield asked about branding with another organization, ie. Cancer Society, Heart
Association, etc. Garry Aloia encouraged any board members interested in joining the Business Alliance
to please let us know.
Anna Rominger asked board members if they saw the advertising of the event in the newspapers. Roger
Wexelberg responded that they provide 2 ¼ page ads, one before the luncheon and one after. He
suggested if they were to co-sponsor, ie. The Times presents the IUN School of Business & Economics
Business Speakers Series Luncheon they would be able to do more advertising.
Committee Chair Reports
Business Alliance – Business Events & Outreach Committee
Matt Dilts commented that we have made headway on advertising the event through the press and
invitations. Garry Aloia mentioned that we need to work more on one-on-one with individual
businesses and getting internships for our business students. Anna suggested possibly having a Business
Alliance Day and having different businesses come to talk to students about internships at different
Garry Aloia suggested maybe building our internships around the jobs that students are working now.
Anna Rominger has two MBA students that are looking for employment. It was suggested that Anna
regularly send out resumes on students to Advisory Board Members.
Student to Business Networking
Helen Harmon mentioned a business networking event that she had for her recent X410 class and she
was able to get some of the advisory board members to attend and talk about their businesses and give
some key soft skills that would benefit the students to have. Helen will have this event for each of her
X410 classes throughout the semesters.

Workshop/Seminar: Doing Business in India

Center for Performing Arts, Munster/Indo American Cultural Center, Merrillville
Jana Szostek commented that we are in the process of setting up an MBA Assessment Center. They are
considering incorporating a mentoring program. Mid-top level managers to be assigned a student to
mentor for a couple of hours a month. These mentors would also be raters to rate the students on all 7
areas and help them with a developmental plan. If interested, Jana has a signup sheet. Looking at
getting 40 companies for the fall semester. Mentors would meet with students once a month or once
every other month for a couple of hours.
Garry Aloia encouraged chairs to meet with their committees before our next meeting to setup some
goals to accomplish for next year.
Steeple Gallery – Ann Singer Art Exhibit – suggestion to have a wine tasting event/art & jewelry exhibit
to raise money for business student scholarships. If anyone is interested, please let Anna know. Neil
Goodman does sculpture work and Dave Klamen does paintings, two world class artists
In June we will have a Dedication of the Bergland Auditorium and a sculpture. More details to come.
