SMS AND WEB BASED TELE-HOMECARE SYSTEM FOR CHRONIC
PULMONARY PATIENTS CARE

Patients' changing need drive biomedical environment. In this concept, tele-homecare is
emerged. Tele-homecare is becoming an increasingly important part of the healthcare service
and it plays a vital role in costly treating of chronic diseases such as chronic pulmonary
diseases. This paper presents the introduction of SMS and Web based tele-homecare system
for pulmonary patients that have been developed by using Visual Studio programming
environment. The system uses spirometry for patient self-testing of lung parameters, cell
phone and computer. Computer monitor test results and transmits PFT (Pulmonary function
tests) results from patients to a web server via XML web service. Cell phone receives
emergency alerts with SMS. The SMS alerts generated based on PFT result’s evaluation. In
addition to this, Web site was created on the internet in order to provide continuously
following the patients, exchanging information, sharing statistical PFT data, answering web
based SF-36 quality of life questionnaire and SMS based feedback. In our study, our software
consists of three different units. These are patient, server and professional support unit.
Respiratory function module that is located in patient unit provides receiving of pulmonary
function test results (FVC, FEV1, FEV1/FVC, FEV25-75, PEF) from spirometry device.
Presentation module provides answering of SF-36 test. Communication module provides the
connection of with the server unit. There is a database in server database module that is
located in server unit. In this database, patient’s acceptable PFT test results, SF-36 test results,
generated alarm information, expert doctor's notes about the patients, PFT reference
parameters, all information obtained from the decision support module are stored. The main
module of the system is the decision support module. In this module, depending on the rules
and the reference values, the evaluations of PFT results are achieved. Web server module
provides web-based secure access for patient’s own tracking, tracking of patients by an expert
doctor. Emergency module provides sending of SMS to inform the person or related person or
center in case of emergency condition. Presentation module that is located in professional
support unit provides adjusting of decision support parameters, revision of alarms (Alarms
arise at PFT test result evaluation) and web based messaging for information and therapy.
Communication module provides the connection with the server unit.
