Decide what type of wedding you want - do you want to be married at the register office or in a church? How many guests do you envisage? What’s your budget? Set the date - this should include deciding on the time of day you’ll be married. Compile your guest list. Many couples opt for family and close friends at the wedding breakfast and their wider circle of friends at the more informal evening ‘do’. If you want to lose weight or generally get fit for your big day, now is the time to start. Establish your goal and get some professional advice from your GP, dietitian or a fitness consultant.

Make sure you arrive at the register office/church at least ten minutes before the time on the invitation. Don’t bring your gift to the church; take it to the reception where it will probably be placed on a table groaning under the weight of presents. Don’t take photographs during the ceremony; you’re not the paparazzi. If you’ve been invited to a wedding but can’t attend it’s polite to send a gift anyway.

Beautiful Brides

lanning your honeymoon

Forget the stress of the dress, cake and vows - the clincher for the perfect wedding is where you go on honeymoon. It’s the most-asked question after ‘What was the dress like?. So when you’re asked where you had your honeymoon, make sure it’s been a holiday to remember. Favourite honeymoon locations include Hawaii, Mexico, Las Vegas and Italy. Booking your honeymoon is one of the most pleasurable tasks of the pre-wedding planning. Make sure you organise your trip well in advance of the big day so there are no last minute travel hitches - and, after the frantic activity of your wedding day, just enjoy getting away from it all.

The Celtic connection
The Isle of Man has a proud Celtic heritage and this can be reflected in your wedding.
Most wedding customs, such as the bride’s dress, rings, wedding cake and flowers, are pretty much universal and your ceremony must conform to state and church law, but you can incorporate Celtic traditions into your day. The traditional good luck custom of ‘something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue’ is well known. Celtic jewellery such as a brooch or pendant can be incorporated here. Another symbol of luck is for the bride and groom to exit the church from a different entrance to the one they arrived by. One of the most common ways of introducing a Celtic flavour is to have a piper lead the bride to the church or even down the aisle. Piping arrival or departure goes back to the clan chiefs and serves as a ceremonious fanfare. Celtic music is a great idea for the wedding reception and there are plenty of local ceilidh bands to choose from.
