Academic Year 2011-2012
Summer Newsletter: number 1
A warm welcome back to everyone and a personal thank you to all who have wished
me ‘Happy Birthday,’ it was a lovely way to recognise such a milestone.
The summer term promises to be an exciting and busy one, the Diamond Jubilee
and the Olympics will give us all a focus for work and celebrations as the term
progresses. You will see from the diary attached that we are using the themes in
some of our whole school work as well as seeing links in work being carried out in
I will also attach a form at the end of the newsletter about the Olympic Torch and its
journey through Glastonbury. This will be taking place on Tuesday 22 nd May. Some
children have asked if we can attend as a school but I’m afraid that this will be too
difficult. We do suggest however that you can take your child to Glastonbury
yourself if you wish to see the torch, returning to school after the event. This is a
solution that is being suggested by a few of the rural schools within the Glastonbury
Thank you to everyone who returned the parent questionnaires. I have now looked
carefully at the replies and we have discussed them as a staff. The main area for
discussion has proved to be the question of homework. This gave rise to the widest
range of opinions, although more people agreed than disagreed that the amount of
homework was appropriate.
The government has already indicated that the timing and amount of homework set
will be for each school to decide, so a focus on the issue is a timely one. We will be
asking the children for their opinions, as well as having it as a staff meeting focus.
We will then send our results to parents for your comments and at the end of the
term; we will also be specifically asking year 6 parents for feedback on their
By the beginning of the new academic year, we would hope to have an approach to
homework, agreed by children, staff and parents.
Residential Trips and Shakespeare Productions
Many of you will be aware that in the past we have visited the Globe Theatre, put on
a production of a Shakespeare play and had a residential visit for years 5 and 6, all
in the same year. Obviously this has proved to be quite a lot to do in one year.
Therefore we have decided upon the following changes to the programme.
October 2012: years 5 and 6 to the Globe Theatre
November 2012: residential trip year 6 only
Years 5 and 6 perform Shakespeare play
Years 5 and 6 to residential camp (current years 3 and 4)
Thus we hope to ensure that both activities, should they continue, will do so on
Rights Respecting Schools
We have started work on this project alongside Butleigh and St Dunstan’s Scchools.
There will be a meeting at St Dunstans on Thursday 3rd May from 7.00-8.30; all
parents are welcome to attend, although St Dunstan’s would like an idea of the
numbers. I will attach a form at the end of this newsletter.
My apologies for not sending this newsletter out sooner please come in and see me
or email if you have any other queries.
Olympic Torch Relay
As you will be aware, the Olympic torch will be carried through Somerset on Tuesday
May 22nd. The school will be open as usual. However, if any parents would like to
take their children to see the procession and then return them to school, then they
are very welcome to do so. The absence will be authorised. Please complete the
reply slip attached so we know in advance which children will be attending. Thank
