Rutherford County voters had 547 total hours to cast early ballots, compared to around 100 hours in
most other Middle Tennessee counties. Wilson County came closest with 360 hours and Cannon County
only offered 37 hours of early voting.
But the sheer number of hours doesn’t make up for the lost Saturday.
The mistake leaves the election, which had some very close and highly contested races, open to being
contested, either by candidates or voters.
The next step is for the Tennessee State Election Commission to review the situation at its next meet-
                                        ing Sept. 21.
Blue Raiders have high expectations for new season
The Middle Tennessee football team wants to put last year’s 10-3 season behind them. Actually, they
                                        decided to bury it.
The bar has been set high for last year’s Sun Belt Conference runner-up. Most preseason predictors
have the Blue Raiders finishing undefeated in the conference and only losing one or two games.
One of those challenges is replacing several key defensive standouts including SBC co-defensive player
of the year Chris McCoy. New defensive coordinator Randall McCray says he wants his defense to improve
not giving up the big plays. Another area he is looking at is finding some leadership on that side of the
                                        ball.
The high-octane offense has the leader coming back in senior quarterback Dwight Dasher, who set
several school records last season. He finished seventh in the nation in total offense.
However, Dasher will be starting his third consecutive year with a new offensive coordinator, Mike
Schultz. The offensive scheme will pretty much be the same.
MTSU begins the season on Sept. 2 at home against Minnesota that will be shown on ESPNU. The game
against the Big Ten member will give the school recognition around the nation.
Reforms will rein in fed spending
WASHINGTON — Rep. Bart Gordon is working with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to implement
reforms to cut the federal deficit and reign in runaway spending.
Gordon joined fellow members of the fiscally conservative Blue Dog Coalition in rolling out the Blue-
print for Fiscal Reform, a plan aimed at cutting spending and balancing the budget. Gordon cosponsored
bills to identify and weed out underperforming programs in the federal budget and to require agencies
to make public regular progress reports.
The top priority for Gordon and fellow Blue Dogs was restoring the pay-as-you-go principle to con-
gressional spending, which passed the House in February.

Minnie Pearl says ‘howdee’ to Smyrna

   The Minnie Pearl Cancer Foun-
