IELTS Discussion Essay Writing Guide By Mehdi Moodi

In a discussion essay you need to look at one statement or practice (something that people do often, especially a particular way of doing something or a social or religious custom) from 2 sides. This means that you should mention some ideas that support it and some others that refute or oppose it. At the end of the discussion, in the conclusion paragraph, you express your own point of view which may support or refute/oppose the topic statement. Here's an Example: You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Over the past years Iran's nuclear program has been a hot issue both in the news and also at people's dinner tables. Considering several sanctions imposed on Iran, Can the vast amounts of money spent by Iran's government on this program be justified? You should write at least 250 words.

Step 1: Brainstorming and Planning. In this step you need to think of at least one idea (held by some people) to support and at least one idea (held by some others) to oppose this practice. You also need to form your point of view. This stage may take up to 5 minutes. Unfortunately, many candidates underestimate the importance of this stage and skip it. This can lead to an incomprehensible essay and consequently a low score. Obviously, you do not write your plan on the answer sheet. It is always helpful and necessary to read the topic several times. This helps your mind to focus on the topic and easily produce ideas. Unfortunately, failing to do so, many candidates deviate from the discussion topic and get a low score from task fulfillment. My Plan: • Government Officials: Iran's nuclear program is peaceful and in absolute compliance with IAEA • West: Iran's Government is seeking nuclear weapons and this is dangerous for world's peace and stability • I believe Iran must suspend uranium enrichment and seek the worlds trust and respect instead

Step 2: Writing the Introduction Paragraph Your introduction paragraph should consist of 4 sentences: 1. "General Background Sentence" which is a general fact related to the topic. 2. "Detailed Background Sentence" which can be a natural consequence of the fact mentioned. 3. "The topic in question" 4. The point of views about the topic that will be discussed. Note that sentences 1, 2 and 3 together introduce the topic. Ever since the tragic events in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the world has been anxious about the possibility of a nuclear war. This great concern provokes heated debates whenever a country seeks the nuclear Technology. Recently, Iran has been spending extravagantly, moving towards its nuclear ambitions which have aroused lots of controversy. While Iranian officials insist on their right to enrich uranium for civilian purposes and are willing to peruse their goals at any cost, the west demands that Iran must stop uranium enrichment or more sanctions will be imposed. Step 3: Writing Supporting Paragraphs (2 paragraphs) Each supporting paragraph should consist of 4 or 5 sentences: 1. "Topic Sentence" which contains the point of view (focus) of the paragraph. 2. Reason(s)/Example(s) 3. "Discussion Sentence" which links the reason(s)/example(s) to the topic sentence. 4. "Conclusion Sentence" which is a supporting statement for those who hold this point of view. According to Iran's officials, Iran's nuclear program is peaceful and in absolute compliance with IAEA's code of conduct and thus must be continued at any cost. Especially because they believe the sanctions are illegal and imposed by arrogant powers. Therefore, complying with the west's demands is the same as cowardly surrendering to those arrogant powers. Looking from this point of view, Iran must follow its nuclear goals regardless of the costs. On the other hand, many western politicians believe that Iran's Government is seeking nuclear weapons and this is dangerous for world's peace and stability. This is mainly due to Iran's failure to declare sensitive enrichment and reprocessing activities to the IAEA. Supporters of this thesis claim that, considering Iran's long-lasing hostility towards Israel

and the US, this may lead to a nuclear crisis. In this regards, Iran must suspend uranium enrichment and respond to IAEA more clearly. Step 4: Writing the Conclusion Paragraph The conclusion paragraph should consist of 3 sentences: 1. "Summery Sentence" which is a brief summery of the two points of view in the supporting paragraphs. 2. Statement of your point of view. 3. A prediction or a recommendation. To sum up, although Iran's economy has been harmed by the sanctions, many Iranians believe the money spent on nuclear programs is wellbudgeted. I, however, believe Iran must temporarily suspend uranium enrichment and seek the world's trust and respect instead as it is not facing any energy shortage and can meet the energy demands through other sources. Meanwhile, Iran's government should try to solve problems such as unemployment which is directly affecting people's welfare.

Writing accurately (grammatically correct) and using a wide range of vocabulary are both very important. However, two other equally important features for an essay are coherence and cohesion. Coherence means your essay must be easy to understand and easy to follow for the reader. Candidates who skip the planning step usually cannot write coherently and their essays are incomprehensible. Using wrong grammar or wrong words will also lead to lack of coherence. Cohesion means that your sentences and ideas must be connected or related in a reasonable way. In order to write a cohesive essay you need to link your sentences using suitable transition expressions, Pronouns and demonstratives. If you fail to do so your essay may look like a mixture or a list of unrelated ideas. Notice how I tried to link my sentences in this sample answer: Ever since the tragic events in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the world has been anxious about the possibility of a nuclear war. This great concern provokes heated debates whenever a country seeks the nuclear Technology. Finally, your essay must fulfill the task requirements. This means it must focus on the topic and answer the essay question completely. It also must be at least 250 words. If your essay is too long then you won't have enough time to check it for mistakes. So try to keep it between 250 and 270. I'm afraid mine is a little too long, but do as I say, not as I do.
