For the 11th consecutive year, TransOptions, the Transportation Management
Association for northwestern New Jersey, will host the Junior Solar Sprint
Model Solar Car Competition (JSS). Races will be held in Morris, Sussex,
Union and Warren counties on May 14 to 17, 2012. An Inter-County Final
Competition will be held on May 29, 2012.

JSS has been exceptionally well-received by students, their teachers and their
families and has become TransOptions’ premier environmental education
program. Participation has grown each year, reaching last year’s peak of 3,200
students on 153 teams from 46 schools. During the last ten years, TransOptions has
brought JSS to nearly 20,000 middle school participants.

Hands-On Environmental Education
JSS is an example of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math)
learning in action. Students design, build and race solar-powered model cars
while experiencing
 An introduction to an alternative and renewable energy source.
 An encounter with problem-solving and collaboration.
 Participation in a challenging and fun event.
 Exploring the power generated by photovoltaic cells (solar panels).

Science in Action
JSS student teams start on a level playing field; they each receive basic
components including a solar panel, a motor, wheels and axles along with rules
for the competition. They spend weeks applying creativity, teamwork and science
skills to design and build their unique model racing cars.

Entries are judged in the categories of Speed, Craftsmanship, Engineering and
Best Use of Recycled Materials. Each team is also required to submit a
Documentation Portfolio providing a record of their concept, design, development
and comments.
A panel of four volunteer judges, drawn from local businesses and communities,
volunteer their time and scientific expertise to evaluate student entries. Awards
are presented to the first, second and third place winners during a ceremony
immediately following the culmination of the races.

A sixth grade student from McKeown School commented that, “We learned that
you can make a car work in different ways and save the earth. We will definitely
compete again next year.” His teacher shared that, “The JSS competition
was a chance for students to learn about forces, motion and energy and how
little things mean a lot.”

FREE Environmental Programs
TransOptions offers free training workshops to help teachers mentor their student
teams in the design, construction and performance of JSS model racing cars.
Free, in-class programs on other environmental topics are also available to
teachers throughout the year. The programs, which are aligned with New Jersey
Core Curriculum Content Standards, uncover the relationship between air quality,
natural resources and creating a sustainable environment.

JSS demonstrates TransOptions’ ongoing commitment to environmental education
by helping future generations learn first-hand about alternative fuels. Your support
enables us to continue delivering this valuable, enrichment program which can
serve to inspire middle school students to explore careers in science, mathematics,
or engineering.

Year after year JSS has consistently garnered kudos from teachers, students and
the media including The Star Ledger, Daily Record, and the New Jersey Herald.

2010 sponsors.
