CLRC Legislative Committee Meeting

Present: Meg Van Patten, Baldwinsville Public Library; Scott Kushner, Lafayette Public
Library; Penelope Klein, liaison, CLRC.
Absent: David Tiedemann, Syracuse University; Kuki Haines, Matilda Joslyn Gage House;
Ann Harris, Mid-York Library System; Doreen Milcarek, OCPL; Richard Strauss, OCPL.
1. Minutes of September 19, 2006: No quorum present to approve minutes; no changes
suggested by committee members present.
2. State legislative/funding update
Penelope met with Colleen Mastine, Education and Culture Liaison for Senator
Penelope met Jeff Brown recently and thanked him for increased funding
Mention of increased library funding in a recent newsletter from Senator
3. National legislative issues – DOPA:
The Bill that had passed the House died in the Senate
DOPA may be reinstated; much will depend on the upcoming election
At a recent conference, Penelope attended a workshop where most of the
participants had not heard of DOPA.
A newsletter from Representative Walsh’s office mentioned that he had voted for
the recent DOPA legislation.
4. Planning for Library Day 2007 in Albany
High school students who are in Participation in Government classes will be
invited to Library Lobby Day and to Legislative Breakfasts
CLRC has address lists ready for the mailings
Lobby Day publicity will state clearly that the bus boards at 6:15 a.m. and leaves
promptly at 6:30 a.m.
5. Legislative Breakfasts 2006
The flyers will be designed this week.
Invitations will be ready to be sent out on November 8 and will depend on the
outcome of the elections.
Invitations will be sent to the Governor-Elect, Janet Welch, State Librarian,
Michael Borges, NYLA, and Rachel Baum NYLA President.
When we invite the high school students, we will suggest that the teachers can
contact the committee for help with preparing their students for the events.
Currently, high schools students have to complete ten hours of community work
service to get their High School diploma
Set up for the breakfasts at Grant Middle School and Mohawk Valley
Grant Middle School:
o Supplies available?
o Tables and space to set-up food?
1. Meg offered to provide pastries
2. Scott offered to provide bagels;
3. Fruit, Juice, Coffee and Tea by CLRC
o CLRC will provide nametags and create legislator packets
The other breakfast will be held at Mohawk Valley Community College,
o MVCC will provide food
Will send flyer to local legislators to encourage attendance.
Time of both events 8:30 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.
Need suggestions and materials for legislator packets
Letter needs to contain language about the breakfast format.
6. Recruiting committee members
Check with Ann Harris to see if she would like to continue on committee
Scott will remain on the committee
Meg wondered about term limits; Penelope will check
John Walters is no longer on the committee.

o NYLA re: READ posters
o Mid-York Library System re: READ posters
