Directions for Completing Proposal for First Year Seminar
For Academic Year 2013-2014
The following information should be included in your proposal for a First Year Seminar.
Deadline for applications is Friday, November 30, 2012. Please note there are two parts to the
application.
Part I – Proposal (submit electronically to tassonjp@muohio.edu)
1. Your name and department
2. Title of FYS and whether the course is proposed as a 3- or 1.5-credit seminar.
3. Provide a 100-word description of the course that can be used for advertising it to students.
4. Proposed Global Miami Plan Foundation area and short (approx. 100 words) description of
ways the seminar fulfills the FND category. Please see http://www.miami.muohio.edu/liberal-
ed/faculty-staff/fnd-cat-descr.html for a description of Global MP FND categories. Please note a
G-Course (FND IIIB) proposal will require additional information (see 6.b. below).
5. If the proposed course emphasizes a global or international theme, please describe.
6. a) Describe the student learning outcomes related to each of the four Miami Plan principles
(critical thinking, understanding contexts, engaging with other learners, and reflecting and acting)
you expect students to accomplish by completing the seminar. Examples of learning outcomes
can be found at http://www.miami.muohio.edu/liberal-ed/faculty-staff/assessment.html
b) For each outcome, give one example of an assignment, class activity, or other method that you
use to help students meet the specified outcome. If you are proposing this course to meet the
Global Course requirement, please describe the ways this seminar will meet at the A-goal and at
least two other goals required of G-Courses. These goals are describe on the G-Course proposal
form, found at http://www.miami.muohio.edu/liberal-ed/faculty-staff/mp-proposal-docs.html
7. Describe innovative instructional practices that you will design into the course to involve
students in active learning, especially any practices that you feel might be particularly helpful to
at-risk students.
8. We may be able to offer a FYS Teacher’s Studio during the fall or spring semester, involving
other first-time FYS instructors. The studio will meet for 1-hour long sessions 5 times during the
semester to reflect on the courses’ progress and generate materials and points of discussion
relevant to other students and faculty involved with the FYS program. Studio participants will
each receive $250 in professional development funding. (Participation in the studio is voluntary.)

Part II – Cover Sheet and Signatures: Complete the cover sheet below and obtain appropriate
signatures from your department chair and dean. Send the cover sheet only via campus mail to
John Tassoni, Office of Liberal Education, 313 Laws, by the deadline.
