and he decided to spend the night in the airport sleeping on a bench waiting
for the morning bus to Jerusalem. He was awakened during the night by

Rabbi Yitz Greenberg, a modern Orthodox Rabbi wrote that “In Israel, Jewish history lives. The wall is
the incarnation of priests and prophets, of prayers and dreams… I have seen countless individuals who
thought they did not care, intensely weep and dance there (at the wall). Suddenly Am Yisrael Chai is a

piety much more quickly than in the United States….Israel heals wounded American souls and restores

the old biblical and Talmudic claim that the souls of all Jews are intertwined as if they stood together
at Sinai.”
The Reconstructionist rabbi, Rabbi Fred Scherlinder Dobb, wrote, “Israel enriches us because Jewish

Israel is not a perfect state but it is a Jewish state and in so many different ways, as warriors defending
the Jewish world, as teachers of Torah and Talmud and Jewish tradition or as exemplars struggling with
all the issues we face in the world today, Israel is important to our existence.
The example, which Israel sets, points us in the direction of how to live as Jews in the world today.
Not as separatists, ignoring the world in which we live, not as idealists who don’t see the reality in front
of us, not as messanists who see only a hope through divine intervention and end of the world as we
know it, but as a real living people living within a real Jewish culture guided by Jewish ethics, Jewish
writings, Jewish sage wisdom.
In the coming year we hope that all of us will have a chance to visit the state of Israel as I intend to do.
We pray that those of us who have been to Israel will continue to gather together at Temple Israel and
share our understanding of Israel’s input into today’s world and to us as Jews. As we begin summer
vacations may we all be strengthened by Israel’s presence in the world and the knowledge that as
imperfect as it is, it is a democracy which thrives on Jewish values, Jewish principles, Jewish laws and
the Jewish people.
Have a wonderful summer.

               A Message from your President
Dear Congregants,
As you are well aware, the economic climate for the past several years, in our country and indeed
around the world, has been one of continuing escalation. It seems that every time we turn around
things are becoming more expensive. Your Board of Directors has tried to stave off the most severe
repercussions of theses economic changes and we feel that we have been successful.
We have managed, over the past couple of years, to absorb some of those expenses through prudent
fiscal management and cost saving measures. There is however, only so far that these measures
will take us. Unfortunately we too have realized the need to make increases to match the rising costs
associated with our daily operating expenses.
With that said, the Board has approved several changes. Please refer to the following chart for new
pricing information.

We have tried, to the best of our ability, to anticipate continued increases in the cost of operating. It
is our hope that with these changes and the changes we made to our dues structure last year we will
be	well	positioned,	with	your	help	of	course,	to	meet	our	financial	needs.

From the Desk of Jason Cathcart, Youth Director
I remember the moment well when I realized I wanted to be a full time
Jewish Educator. I was working at Camp Ramah in the Poconos and we
had	just	finished	an	evening	program	for	about	60	fourth	and	fifth	graders.
Their excitement about doing something Jewish was contagious. That was
the moment! When I was lucky enough to hear about the Youth Director
position at Temple Israel, I couldn’t believe my ears. This was it; working
with children, helping them to learn Jewishly in an experiential setting. For
the past ten years, I feel so fortunate that I was able to work with some
of the brightest and most committed young people our community has
to offer. We have had the chance to play together, learn together, laugh
together,	and	cry	together. It’s	difficult	to	sum	up	the	last	ten	years,	but	I
would like to share some thoughts and feelings.
To all of my past and present members of USY, Kadima and Jr. Kadima:
Thank you for the time and passion that you shared with me. I am a better person from knowing all
of you.
The advisors, past and present, of the Youth Department are a fabulous group of role models for the
young people of our congregation. Their work behind the scenes ensures the youth group members
are happy and safe. Thank you for all of your hard work, time and patience.
Thank you to the Youth Committee, Board of Trustees, congregational families, and supporters of the
Youth Department. A tree must have strong roots. You have provided a solid foundation for USY,
Kadima	and	Jr.	Kadima	to	flourish. The	future	of	the	youth	department	will	grow	stronger	with	your
support and guidance.
The clergy and staff at Temple Israel are a fantastic group of people. They are smart, creative and
passionate about serving our congregation. They work tirelessly to make our shul an amazing place.
Whether it’s long hours preparing for the High Holy Days, preparing meals, making sure the room
looks just right for a program, or the team effort of putting out over 800 copies of the monthly bulletin,
I thank them all.
A special note of thanks to my suite-mates: Debby Block and Stephanie Tuckman. I could not have
asked for better “roommates” for the last four years. You were always there for me to bounce ideas
around or work through a problem. Your commitment to excellence is outstanding and you should be
very proud of the work you do.
I would not be here today without my family standing behind me and pushing me forward to excel. My
Mom, Dad (z”l) and my brother are always an inspiration to me, and Vicki and Jordan are the lights
of my life. Thank you for everything over the last ten years.
As I drive away from this part of my professional career, I take a little piece of everyone that I have
met, with me. These pieces will help me to strive for excellence in the next phase of my career,
personally and professionally. I wish Temple Israel b’hatzlcha (good luck).
B’Ahava (with love),

            Charlotte Jewish Preschool
It	is	hard	to	imagine	that	my	fifth	year	as	CJP	Director	has	just	ended!	While	the	end
of a year is always a little bittersweet, I love to think about what we have done in the
course of a year and how much the children have grown! Take a little trip with me to
see some of the events of another special year at The Charlotte Jewish Preschool.
Best	wishes	and	last	high	fives	to	all	our	graduating	students! I	look	forward	to	hearing
all about kindergarten when I see you next time. I hope everyone in our CJP family
has a happy and healthy summer. I’ll look for you at the LJCC pool this summer and
at	the	front	door	when	school	starts	again.	Thank	you	all	for	a	terrific	year!
Denise Abadi,
Director of The Charlotte Jewish Preschool

Pre-K Feista! Ole! Happy Fall from the Full Day Fours!

Making the Choice: Enroll for Kindergarten

It’s a busy world out there, with lots of demands made on your time
and energy. Parents are frequently called upon to make important Resgistered Yet?
decisions on their child’s behalf, including the decision of whether to
enroll their child in religious school.
Being Jewish is not something that suddenly occurs when a child
reaches the mid-elementary years. An early start to Jewish education
makes perfect sense. Just as your child is in the process of acquiring
skills in secular school, the opportunity for the beginning acquisition
of Jewish knowledge and values to form within a positive Jewish
setting amongst Jewish friends.

                                                                             Time is running out to

Enrolling in Temple Israel Religious School (TIRS) beginning in Kindergarten means that your child
will be able to continue and to build Jewish friendships. Enrolling in TIRS means your child will
continue to have a place where being Jewish is valued. (For many children that are leaving a Jewish
preschool and transferring to a secular school, they miss the Jewish environment that they had in
preschool.) Enrolling in TIRS means that your child, the Rabbis, and the Cantor begin to have an
on-going	relationship	and	that	the	synagogue	plays	a	significant	role	in	your	family’s	life. Enrolling	in
TIRS means that your child will become familiar with many bible stories. Enrolling in TIRS means that
your child will learn the ALEFBET. Enrolling in TIRS means singing Jewish songs, dancing Jewish
dances, and cooking Jewish foods. Enrolling in TIRS means that your child will be proud of his/her
Jewish identity!
Why wait? Make the right choice. Register your child for Temple Israel today!
Registration for students of all ages is currently being accepted. Please contact Debby Block, Principal,

        Israel @ 60 Festival: A Big Success
Sunday, May 4 offered an amazing day of food, fun and
festivities	–	truly	a	befitting	tribute	to	Israel’s	milestone
60th birthday. For those that missed it let me share
with you a few of the highlights:
The Festival was spread throughout Camp Mindy and
beyond! Thanks	to	the	well-mapped	floor	plan,	there
was enough room for everyone and everything without
feeling cramped :
•The	Walk	the	Land	walk	had	more	than	200	participants
departing from Camp Mindy to the trumpeting of
the Shofar; their 2-mile walk through Lansdowne was
a festive and collective celebration of Israel by walkers
of all ages! Thank you to the Teen Coalition (BBYO,
Hebrew High, LIBERTY, USY, JCC Teens, JFS) for
spearheading this effort!
•Temple Israel sponsored DIG THE PAST and had
the children enthusiastically digging through the dirt
looking for past treasures in the archaeological dig.
•Festival participants indulged in Dead Sea Spa
treatments, under the watchful eye of Temple Beth El.
•Charlotte	Jewish	Preschool	and	Jewish	Preschool	on
Sardis manned the arts & crafts station, much to the
delight of our youngsters.
•Charlotte	Jewish	Day	School	had	the	crowds	devouring
their delicious falafel and Israeli salad – not a drop of
hummus or pita left! •The Levine JCC coordinated the “Maccabi

in Davidson.
After a welcome for Rabbi Jeremy Gerber, the
congregation’s rabbinical intern, the crowd was
taken back to the horrors of the Holocaust by
Mr. Henry Hirschmann of Charlotte and Mr.
Manfred Katz of Statesville. The audience was
clearly moved by the survivors’ accounts of their
childhoods cut short, their families decimated and
their homes destroyed.
In addition, two students from STAND, an anti-
Genocide Coalition umbrella organization of over
600 high school & college chapters dedicated to
putting an end to genocide, Rebecca Grossman
and Colleen Jose spoke about their organization’s
effort to help bring an end to genocide. The
evening was capped off by candle lighting and
prayer led by Rabbi Gerber.
The event was led by Beth Shalom member and
Executive Vice President elect, Len Sadek. “It
was a labor of love putting this event together,”
he remarked. Mr. Sadek’s parents met when his
mother was liberated from a concentration camp
by his father.
