I NDIGESTION R EMEDIES
EQUIPMENT
Possible equipment:
100 cm3 beaker Universal indicator solution
Pestle and mortar Different types of antacid tablets
Funnel and filter paper Measuring cylinder
Hydrochloric acid Other
TECHNIQUES
Crushing: A pestle and mortar can be used to crush the tablet into a fine powder.
Dissolving: Dissolving the crushed tablets with a small amount of water will be like saliva.
Filtering: The solution can be filtered to remove undissolved particles.
Using Universal Indicator: Indictor can be used to measure the pH of the acid before and
after the reaction.
VARIABLES
Consider the variables that you can control, measure and change. How many tablets will
you use for each experiment? One of each, or the dose it suggests on the packet.
SAFETY
What risks are there when:
Crushing tablets?
Handling and pouring acid?
Using glass?
How will you control them for yourself and for others?
RANGE, INTERVALS AND RELIABILITY
Range: How many types of antacid tablets will you investigate?
Intervals: What intervals of pH are you using? Will you use indicator or a digital pH meter
Reliability: How many times will you measure the pH of the acid? How will you ensure
that your investigation is reliable?
ABOUT ANTACIDS
The types of alkali (or base) that antacids contain can be chemicals such as:
Calcium carbonate
Magnesium carbonate
Sodium bicarbonate
Look at the ingredients on the packets to find how much is in each tablet.
