The month of December has been wonderful…exciting, celebratory and joyful.
We read many Christmas stories, made some lovely crafts, sang songs, and
learned about our classmates’ Christmas traditions. Thank you again for all your
help with the crafts here at school, the work being done at home (gluing/cutting),
and for your continued support.
In January we will “sail off to sea” and explore the ocean. I have interesting
activities planned, good stories and fact finding discoveries. I should have some
pictures from my Maui trip and maybe something from the ocean. “Iggy” will
continue to introduce letters to the class and we will read the mini movement
books, do our movement activities, draws and sound book. We will continue with
our literacy centers in the morning which is a time that focuses on letters, letter
sounds, sight words and pre reading activities. Our morning message has
become an important part of our morning calendar routine and it provides an
opportunity for the students to read along and look for letters and words that
they know. Journal writing and printing will be ongoing and number exploration
will be our focus for January.
As part of our Sea theme we will be going to West Edmonton mall to see the
sea caverns. The dates will be Tuesday, January 22 and Wednesday, January 23.
More information will be sent home in January.
This month we will begin our Home Reading which is a great opportunity for
students to read a short, simple story. Many of the students will need your help
reading the story and I would encourage you to point to the words as you read
the story together. This is to be a positive experience, no pressure, just another
opportunity to explore print.
If your child is “Star For the Day” please have them share something that has to
do with the ocean. It could be a picture or an artifact…anything will be great and
will add to our sea theme.
I look forward to seeing you all in 2013!
