(for money and time) are set up for success;
(2) To ensure that parent-led Fundraising is being run according to PAC and School Fundraising guidelines (in
order to ensure the legal and physical protection of parents, students, and school).
(3) To field Fundraising ideas, both from Cavell parents as well as from external supporters, and make
recommendations to Cavell Parents, via PAC meetings, of which opportunities to pursue.
(4) To do all of this with the goal of securing volunteer support and wide parent participation to implement

Active Fundraising Initiatives
Movie Day March 13 – tickets are selling well, but there are still tickets available online, so please invite your
friends and neighbours and help us make this a smashing success!!!
Carnival June 10 – Natalie & Paula
o Still in planning phase – lots of new ideas and lots of parent volunteers so far!!!
o Funding request will likely be from 500.00 to 2,000.00 (details to come before last PAC meeting in June).
o Denise Ashmore will be handling volunteer coordinating and will work with Heidi and Class Parents for
communicating further information and asking for Carnival help.
There will be many opportunities for people to help out on the day of Carnival, ie as runners or
as part of clean up crew, etc. Please let Denise or your Class Parent know if you can help, even
just for a few hours. Thank you!!!!
o If you have any great connections, ie people who could donate gift certificates to restaurants, event
tickets, or local services, please let Natalie and Paula know, as they are putting together Raffle baskets -
these are an enormous portion of the event’s fundraising.

School Hot Lunch Program Discussion
2010/2011 school year: 5 lunch days, but we are not making a profit, some days are very costly, and we need to
discuss cost vs convenience.
o Income from food day has gone from 8000.00 to only 500.00 – how do we keep prices reasonable, but
not lose money?
o Should we increase the cost to the parents, or should we be looking for less expensive options?
Agreement that charging parents more isn’t necessarily the answer; perhaps we could reduce the
number of hot lunch days to 4, and generate more interest?
o The lack of Parent volunteers for food days has also become an issue – perhaps parents are too spread
o With increase in options, are there too many choices and too much cost to parents?
Hot dog day costs have increased the most because we are now buying packaged hot dog meals instead of
making our own. Should/can we go back to the old way (boiling them on our new stove)?
o Joan: the only dilemma with the old way was finding a provider who could guarantee a nut-free bun!
Four parent volunteers are likely needed on hot dog days.
Decision to reduce the number of food days for next school year to 4 (instead of 5):
o Motion to cancel Subway Day (due to fewest orders this year) for 2011/2012 school year – Motioned
by Joanne Partridge, Seconded by Erin Davies. All in favour. Motion passed.
Motion to look into switching Hot Dog Day back to original method (cooked at school by volunteers) for
2011/2012 school year, assuming supplier of nut-free buns can be sourced. Motion by Catherine Burke,
Seconded by Laura Sterns. All in favour. Motion passed. Erin Davies and Chantal Oxley will report back to PAC
Other lunch day decisions:
o On-line orders will be done in two halves next year (ie September and February) to ease September
costs and to allow parents to adjust their orders partway through the school year.
o Pasta, Sushi, and Pizza are currently in place for next year, but a Sushi Day owner is needed, and
discussions will take place regarding food day content before next year (discussion for upcoming PAC
o Decision made that any leftovers/extras will be sold to kids, parents, and teachers once handout is over.
Extra juice and milk can be sold also. Please send students with a few dollars on food days if you think
they will want to buy a second piece of pizza or extra sushi, milk, or juice, etc. Contact food day
parents with specific questions.
Community Update – Karen Gilchrist
o Karen is a Cavell parent, recently completed Masters in Social Work, lives at Heather Place near VGH.
Building is running down, some families are leaving, others have been told the building might be
redeveloped, rent subsidies are being replaced, and it would be a blow to our community to lose these
families from our neighbourhood.
o Karen has aligned with Apple BC and other Community organizations who promote Place-based strategy
of community development, where schools are encouraged to be a Community hub, as Cavell does.
o April 2 timeframe for Community gathering, possibly at Cavell. Contact Karen at
email@example.com with any questions or for more information about Heather Place and other
School Garden – Ruth Ann & Mary
o Volunteer with potential Grant funding may come in April to propose running a garden at our school
year-round – stay tuned!
