CDS (Combined Defense Service) written exam is held two times in a year i.e. in February and in
August. It is conducted by the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) for the recruitment of
various vacancies under Indian Military Academy (IMA), Indian Naval Academy (INA), Officers
Training Academy (OTA), and Air Force Academy (AFA).

CDS exams are designed differently for different vacancies such as test comprising of English,
General Knowledge and Elementary Mathematics subjects are for the candidates who are
appearing for Indian Naval Academy, Air Force Academy and Indian Military Academy, each of
100 marks which makes it total of 300 marks, where as the candidates who are appearing for
the Officers Training Academy, the test comprising of English and General Knowledge, each of
100 marks and makes it a total of 200 marks.

There is a certain eligibility criteria for applying for the CDS exam such as the candidate who is
graduate, BA Part III provisional/equivalent pass can also apply. In addition age eligibility is
around 19-24 (IMA), 19-25 (OTA), 19-23 (AF), 19-22 (Navy) at the time of commencement of
the training and only unmarried candidates are eligible to sit for the exam.

UPSC selection procedure consists of mainly three stages:

      Written Exam
      Personal Interview/Intelligence test
      Verification of Documents
      Medical Examination

After written test, the candidates are called for the personal interview which is consists of
verbal and non verbal group discussion, that is designed to access their intelligence. Once
candidate qualify the written exam and personal interview, their documents are verified and
will undergo a medical examination by a Board of Service Medical Officers.

In order to prepare yourself for the CDS exam and training, one should plan or schedule their
time table and needs to first understand the exam pattern so that he/she can prepare easily.
Various books and study materials are available in the market with the last year sample papers
that are very helpful in recognizing the pattern of the exam. Prepare systematically by knowing
the correct exam syllabus, and give adequate time to each subject and section of the
examination.
For the preparation of English subject/section one can read English news paper, magazines and
books daily to improve their vocabulary and for the General Knowledge section, one need to
possess information about the latest or current events about the country, state and regions.

In addition several sites are also available on internet which provides helpful information about
the preparation of CDS examination. However many institutes are established which offers
training program for the same and provide crash course to the candidates to get success in first
attempt. They provide training with the help of trained professional which guides candidates
