 1) Turn to pages 68-69 in your text book.

 2) Find definitions for the following words
and write them in your workbook
    ◦ Element
    ◦ Atom
    ◦ Ion
    ◦ Molecule
    ◦ Compound
 An element is a substance made up of only
    one type of atom

                          5

                  B
                 Boron
 The smallest building blocks of matter
 An element that has either a positive or
negative charge due to having lost or gained
    an electron

    ◦ Example 1: Cl (chlorine) when it gains an electron is
      written as Cl-

    ◦ Example 2: H (hydrogen) when it loses an electron
      is written as H+
 A group of more than one atom

    ◦ These can be the same element as in Hydrogen gas
      Watch Demo

    ◦ Or they can be in different elements, like water
      being made of H and O (H2O)
 A group of atoms from different elements

    ◦ Continuing the example from before if H+ and Cl-
came together they would make HCl
 Element: An element is a substance made up
of only one type of atom
 Atom: The smallest building blocks of matter
 Ion: An element that has either a positive or
negative charge due to having lost or gained
    an electron
 Molecule: A group of more than one atom
 Compound: A group of atoms from different
    elements
