The Honorable Ruth D. Vogel Fund for Professional Development
The Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions
Ruth Denton Vogel was born in Buffalo, NY in 1917. She received scholarships to D'Youville
College and the University of Buffalo Law School. One of two women in her law class, she
graduated in 1938 with honors, second in her class. After passing the bar, she worked for the
Erie County Social Services Department until 1942, when she joined a law firm. In the mid-
1950’s, she ran for election as City Judge of Tonawanda, NY. She did not win, but was
appointed Acting Judge. Upon the death of the City Judge she took over the bench and was
twice re-elected, serving as City Judge for 10 years. She had the distinction of having been the
first woman elected official in the history of Tonawanda. She had a particular interest in social
justice and the potential of young people. After leaving office, she returned to the private
practice of law. She married Irving S. Vogel, DDS in 1939. They had two daughters, Barbara
Fishman of Los Gatos, CA and Donna Vogel of Bethesda, MD. Judge Vogel died in 1973 at the
age of 56. This annual award will be made to recognize outstanding students, trainees or
fellows to enhance their career development.
