NORTHSTAR adds advanced procedures and technologies
NORTHSTAR’s ongoing commitment to providing state-of-the-art health care to the communities it serves is no more
evident than in the recent addition of several advanced procedures and technologies. These new additions enable
NORTHSTAR’s physicians and staff to continue to provide expert care close to home.

Vacuum-Assisted Biopsy

NORTHSTAR is now able to perform Vacuum-Assisted Breast Biopsy (VAB) – a tissue sampling technique that uses
a special instrument to remove samples of breast tissue through a single, small incision. This technique allows the
surgeon to remove more tissue than is possible with a traditional core biopsy and is much less invasive than an open
surgical biopsy.

VAB leaves only a small incision and takes less than an hour to perform. Patients can usually return to normal activities
soon after the procedure. It provides the ability to retrieve larger amounts of tissue for diagnosis without the costs and
discomforts of an open surgical biopsy.

VITEK 2 Analyzer

The laboratory is the new home for a VITEK 2 analyzer, which aids NORTHSTAR’s microbiologists in identifying the
type of bacteria found in a patient sample and in determining what antibiotics will be most effective in treating the
patient’s infection. In a matter of hours, the lab can then provide physicians with critical test results for a wide
range of organism/antibiotic combinations.

The system also has specialized software called Advance Expert System, which helps flag subtle changes in
a bacteria’s antibiotic resistance patterns, helping fight against the antibiotic resistant superbugs.

Aplio MX Ultrasound System

NORTHSTAR was the first facility in the nation to implement the new Aplio MX ultrasound system, a full-service
ultrasound system that covers a wide spectrum of exams, and provides exceptionally clear, high-resolution images
that contain more clinical detail – paramount for making correct diagnoses. In addition, the Aplio MX includes a
system for vascular imaging, which will be utilized in NORTHSTAR’s new vein clinic.

Portable X-Ray Technology

NORTHSTAR Health System and Iron County Medical Care Facility (ICMCF) have partnered together in bringing
portable x-ray technology to ICMCF’s residents. The new on-site technology allows a digital imaging technologist
from NORTHSTAR to each day visit ICMCF for patient x-rays, alleviating the inconvenience of having to transport
ICMCF residents to NORTHSTAR for such needs. This new on-site imaging technology is much more efficient and
cost effective, decreasing the time of diagnosis from days to hours – within 15 minutes of taking the image, a board
certified radiologist can review and consult with the ordering physician on findings.

Taking care of your heart: NORTHSTAR and you
Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women, with coronary heart disease being the most common type of heart
disease. Every year about 785,000 Americans have their first heart attack, while another 470,000 individuals who have already had one or
more heart attacks have yet another attack.

NORTHSTAR is pleased to announce the addition of Dr. Barbara Washington, a board-certified cardiologist, to the visiting specialist provider
staff at NORTHSTAR. Dr. Washington will see patients at NORTHSTAR Crystal Falls and perform cardiology testing at NORTHSTAR Hospital.

“With Dr. Washington on board, our cardiac patients will have more frequent access to a cardiologist,” says Bruce Rampage, NORTHSTAR
president and CEO. “In addition, Dr. Washington’s presence will further enhance patient services and quality as she will also be available for
consulting purposes and to supervise all cardiology testing.”

Dr. Washington joins Dr. Timothy Tanke, Dr. Donnevan Blake and Dr. James Rider in providing the best cardiac care to the communities that
NORTHSTAR serves. Cardiology services at NORTHSTAR include, but are not limited to, patient visits, pharmacological stress tests, nuclear
stress tests, exercise stress tests, holter monitors (24- and 48-hours), event monitors (30-day), EKGs and rhythm strips.
