Introduction

When using ProShow Gold there are several files created and saved to your computer during the creation of a Show, the
collecting of Show files, and for backup and recovery. An understanding of the types of files and how they are used can
be very helpful to any User. ProShow Gold has a chapter titled ProShow Gold Show Files in their written documentation
dedicated to these files. The following is detailed information from that documentation and practical experience on
these files and how they are used.

Types of Show Files

PSH File
PSH is the extension for the Photodex Slide Show File. This file is the main file for your Show. It contains all of the
settings and options that ProShow Gold needs to load, create and play your show. It does not contain any of the
content of your show (images, audio, or video). The PSH file is opened to load a Show into ProShow Gold and is
updated every time you save a Show. If this file is deleted, your Show no longer exists, but the images, music or video
used in your show will remain.

The PSH file contains a list of all the other files used in your Show. If you move your PSH file, ProShow may not be able
to locate the images or other content used in your Show. However, if you attempt to load a Show and the content
cannot be found, ProShow Gold will prompt you and assist you in locating the files.
If you wish to back up your show, you must back up both the PSH file and the original content used in your show. The
Collecting Show Files function automates this process for you and ensures that all your content is copied correctly.

PXC File
PXC is the extension for Photodex Cache File. This file is created by ProShow Gold whenever you load a saved Show. It is
a cache used to ensure that content is quickly accessible to the program. It is automatically maintained as you work with
your show. It can be deleted at any time. If you delete this file, ProShow Gold will automatically recreate it when
necessary. You cannot load a show from a PXC file, or recover lost content from this file.

Show Content Files
When you drop a photo, video clip or music file into a Show, ProShow Gold does not copy or modify your file. It simply
notes in your show where the original content is saved on your hard drive. If you move your original content, your
show will contain broken images or music. ProShow will assist you in finding those files when you load the show. This
minimizes hard drive usage and ensures that you always get the best quality because the software always uses the
original files when possible. The Collect Show Files function lets you copy all the content used in your show into a single
folder for backup and archiving purposes.

Collecting Show Files

The Collect Show Files feature gathers all the content needed to load, play or output your Show and places it in a single
location. This allows you to easily back up your Show, or move it to another location or computer. From within the
Collect Show Files window you can copy your Show to a folder, or burn a disc. The Collect Show Files creates three
folders for your Show content.

Image folder
This is all of the pictures in the Show that have been collected into a separate file from where they originally were
located. The original pictures are still maintained in their original location.

Audio folder
This is all of the audio files in the Show that have been collected into a separate file from where they originally were
located. The original audio files are still present in their location.

Video folder
This is all of the video files in the Show that have been collected into a separate file from where they originally were
located. The original video files are still present in their location.

Normally, it is best to wait until your Show is complete to collect the show files. If you make any changes after the files
have been collected there are special steps required to make sure the content is current. Another good idea is to
collect all of the files to the same folder on your computer that you have been using while creating the Show.

Backup and Recovery
ProShow Gold helps to protect you from accidentally losing your Show due to computer difficulties through three
features: auto-save, back-up and recovery.

Auto-Save
As you work on a Show, ProShow Gold automatically saves it every five minutes. This happens in the background as you
work and requires no action on your part. These files are maintained in the Programs/Photodex/ProShow Gold folder on
your computer. If for any reason your Show is not properly saved (such as a power outage, computer failure, or program
error), on start up ProShow will automatically ask you if you would like to restore the last auto-saved Show. The most
you can lose is what was done in the last five minutes or since your last save (whichever is less). All you need to do to
recover is launch ProShow Gold. Regardless of this feature, always save your current Show as often as possible.

Back-Up
When you save a Show in ProShow Gold, the software will automatically back up your last 10 saves and requires no
action on your part. This back up feature means that if you make an unwanted change to your show, you can always go
back, even if you already saved your changes. The most current back-up file will have an extension .bak, the back-up
prior to that will have extension .b01, prior to that .b02, etc.

                                         ProShow Gold Show Files

Recovery
You can revert back to the saved version of your Show, the last auto-saved version, or any of the available backups at
any time using the Revert to Backup function in the File menu. This feature will list all the available versions of your
Show, allowing you to access earlier versions at will.

Temporary Video Files
When you create any Show output that requires ProShow Gold to render a video (DVD, video CD, video file, etc),
ProShow Gold will create a temporary video file in the same folder as your PSH file. This file contains the video rendered
by the software, and will have an extension of .MPG. These files are kept after the output is complete so that you can
create additional copies of your output without having to wait for the software to render the video again. You may
delete these files at any time, but after they are deleted, you will have to wait while the show re-renders the next
time you create output.

ISO and CUE/BIN Files
The ISO and CUE-BIN files are disc images used to burn CDs and DVDs. These files contain all the information (including
the data) necessary to write a disc. These files may be created temporarily as part of authoring a DVD, Video CD, or
Autorun CD in ProShow Gold. You have the option in these output formats of saving these files rather than actually
writing a disc. Most CD and DVD burning programs can read these files and create a final disc based on their
information. One of the best programs is IMG Burn that can be downloaded for free. It is kept updated and can be
downloaded easily on a regular basis. The link to the website to read about and download IMG Burn is
http://www.imgburn.com/.

Figure 21 – Changing a picture in the show

It is always best to have all of your picture, audio and video files as you want them to appear in the show before
collecting files. However, sometimes after collecting files you have a picture that just needs to be changed. This is very
tricky and experience has shown that giving the changed picture a different name works best. This first example shows
what will happen if you do not change the name of the changed picture. Open Show. First delete 2003-02 #03.jpg from
the Slide List. Then add changed picture 2003-02 #03.jpg to Slide List. Notice that text was added in to picture 03. Save,
collect files with a check mark in overwrite existing files, and close show.

You could leave “overwrite existing files” unchecked, however this will create an entire new set of images, audio, and
video files. This really add a lot of unnecessary files stored on your hard drive.

The video file has stayed the same.

Figure 25 –Image folder contents.

The image files have all stayed the same even though we inserted a new file.

The reason for this is that when ProShow collected the files, it recognized that it already had a file 2003-02 #03.jpg.
Therefore it did not collect the changed version of this file.

First all of the .psh, .pxc and .B** files have been updated accordingly.

The Audio and Video files have remained the same. No screen shots captured for presentation.

Figure 29 –Image folder contents.

The new image file 2003-02 #03 – Modified.jpg is present in the image folder.

All of the other files are the same that were present prior to this change. The reason that 2003-02 #03 is present is that
files are not automatically deleted from the collected file folders. Even though it is present, it will not appear in the show
because the new .psh does not have this image as part of the show and there is no pointer to this file in the collected file
folders.

necessary to burn a DVD using external programs such as IMG Burn. The second is the temporary .mpg files that are
contained in a new folder created by ProShow Gold. There are actually several files created supporting this file.

Figure 35 – Further examples of Collect Files without overwriting files

Earlier there was some documentation on subsequent Collecting Files due to a change in a picture after the initial
collecting of files. It stated that if you did not overwrite files there would be extra files generated that would take up
space on your hard drive. This example is to show those files. Only three image files were used.

First Collect Show Files, no changes, overwrite existing files not checked.

Figure 35C – Further examples of Collect Files without overwriting files

Resulting files in Image Folder. There are now six images present. 2003-02 #01.jpg, 2003-02 #02.jpg and 2003-02 #03.jpg
that are the original pictures. 2003-02 #01_000.jpg, 2003-02 #02_000.jpg that are additional copies of the two pictures
that were unchanged and 2003-02 #03_000.jpg that is the changed picture added to the show. ProShow added the
extension 000 to identify which images to use for the Show. However, now you have extra pictures that are not needed.

Figure 35D – Further examples of Collect Files without overwriting files

Below is the files after the Collect. There is a new .psh and a new .pxc that should be using the latest pictures with the
extension of 000.

Open the updated Show. The changed 3rd slide is not present even though it was present in the collect files. Opened the
Collect Show Files window and highlighted the image 2003-02 #03.jpg to see the file path. ProShow displayed collected
files pointed to image folder, but did not use the images with the 000 extension. It appears that because name of
changed file remained the same, that it used 2003-02 #03.jpg instead of 2003-02 #03_001.jpg. So, not only did it
created unnecessary files when not overwriting existing files, the results were not as desired.

Figure 36 – Example of Burning Collected Files to Disk and Transferring to another location.

The Collect Show Files feature allows you to burn your show to a disk. All content (images, music, video) will be copied
to that disk. The show file (*.PSH) will be copied to that disk. This file will be updated to use the content from the new
location. You can then move it from the disk to another computer. However, it should be noted that it might be easier
to copy all of your files from the applicable folder onto a portable external drive (flash drive, etc.) and then transfer
them to the other computer. The procedure is similar to Copy to Folder except you left click on the Burn to DVD/CD in
the Collect Show Files window. Then choose the applicable drive location and left click on Collect to process.
