W.S.B.C.
By Daniel Laurion Designed by Jasmine Burnham To California as a Big Team and Small Players. Basketball, cheerleading, boys, girls, it didn’t matter. This is the one time of the year when a difference couldn’t stand; we all are together as one. We share experiences, live close and open up, share spirit, and grow as one. In this time there was a lot learned by many, but when you look back to see what it was, we learned about one another. Finally we could open up to a more comfortable zone away from home where it did not matter what others thought, and we could be ourselves. The teams enjoyed 4 days of basketball and some intense spirited cheerleading. Things were not the best as they could have been. You don’t have to take it all from me you can ask the ones that were there. The omens started once we arrived in CSDR-Riverside, things were not set, so we were forced to wait for the clueless staff to make things up off the top of their heads. Not all were too happy, but once the tip off started; things started to flow. We were lead to the gym for the hot shots, free throw, and 3 point competitions. Then, CSDR started to break even, but the worst was not there, yet. Once the events were over WSD went to the dorms and got ready to hit the sack. The next 2 days were ok, but there were few things that came up, but overall, there was nothing too off-the-wall, except, for the go-karts. On the 2nd night we were there, they had go-kart event and it was the most fun for many. The amount of fun was outstanding and there were a lot happening. All students were involved in a 10 lap race and the ones waiting where on the side lines cheering others on and showing pride for each other. Also, that was the only night that CSDR provided decent food. Well, that same night we had one person come in first with the racing, and that was RON, also known by his street name, SUPERMAN. He won his first race well ahead, but he went for a 2nd time and this time head on with all the staff. WSD was proud and there was no doubt because from all the schools you could see where WSD was standing, because they were the only ones cheering and showing pride. Our very own Superman Terrier took first once again and that made the night for the team. Things after that night were ok, but nothing special. Both the boys and girls team lost 2 games and only won 1. You would ask where the team was and what was wrong, but no one knew and like some wondered, were they left in Washington? The only one I felt bad for was LZ because he was being tormented the whole time. I guess he’s funny or cute because the girls would not lay off him and it looked like a pretty boy running from a mob of girls and you would look at him and want to help, but one would not dare jump in. Finally, the time to pack arrived and It was nice to head back home where the air is dirty, but cold and refreshing and the food was not a plate of barf. This year was not the best turn out, but there’s always next year and we still have our pride. We are back in our very own dog house and chanting “Big Team... Little me.”

What is Autism?
By Alyssa Ortiz

Breast Cancer
By Jasmine Burnham

You might know several individuals that are affected by this disorder, Autism. Many of you might not know exactly what it is, so I wanted to provide you with that opportunity. Using the website, http:// www.autismspeaks.org/whatisit/index.php, I was able to obtain a massive amount of information concerning this disorder. “Autism is a complex neurobiological disorder,” what this disorder does to people is; it impairs their ability to communicate, relate and connect with others. In some cases, repetitive behavior, or lack of social skills are present. There is a lot of research being done currently on this issue, but as of right now, there is no cure. But people are starting to notice that they seem to respond best to highly structured behavior and sometimes, a change in diet. Here are some statistics, “1 in 150 individuals are diagnosed with Autism.” It is “4 more times likely to strike boys than girls.” If you find yourself with a baby or someone close to you that has been diagnosed with autism, there are many treatments available, many methods to improve the person’s ability to live independently, but remember there is no cure. Look at this web site for more information on what to do, http://www.autismspeaks.org/whattodo/index.php. 4

Concerned? Look out for these signs!! This one symptom is the 80% cases found breast cancer out of all women who discovered a lump that may feel unusual in their breast tissues. Most often, lumps are found below the clavicles (collarbones) and near the armpits. What is a mammogram? It is a special x-ray to have a picture of what’s inside us, used the most for breast cancer screening, to detect tumors, or any other abnormalities. Other symptoms are the changes in breast size, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, or spontaneous single-nipple discharge. Sometimes, it may be painful, but not always. This issue may be related to mastodynia. This is when the breast is being uncertain in pain. Inflammatory breast cancer is when there is a skin inflammation meaning it includes pain, swelling, warmth, and redness throughout the breast. Metastatic disease, occasionally represents as breast cancer. It is cancer that has spread beyond the original organ; more common: bone, liver, lung, and brain. Occasionally, symptoms may be an unexplained weight loss, fevers, or chills; bone or joint pains can also be manifestations of many other illnesses which means these symptoms are “non-specific”. If you have seen any of these symptoms, it should be taken seriously by your doctors because of the possibility of an underlying breast cancer at ANY age. Make-up Tips
By Jasmine Burnham Hey, that’s way too much eye shadow! Where is your makeup? You look too pale. Ok, that is enough of not knowing what to do with all the make-up in your bag sitting in your dark closet, right? Here is what you should do: if you had almost all the same color clothes (example: purple jacket with purple shoes), you should try to have a darker similar color right on the top of your eyelashes, then go lighter to the underneath of your eyebrows. Make it look flowing and blooming. Bright and bold red lipstick is best matched with only black and white clothes. You have to be always sure that your face is completely clean before you put some make-up on because you would look fresh that way and it would be easier to wash it off at nighttime, too! Keeping your face clean all the time would help you to always be able to wear make-up everlasting without any facial problems especially the pimples, ugh – I know! Go to www.teenvogue.com for more tips or ideas of fashions for all types of styles! What about lipsticks? They always get on my teeth every time! Here is other tip: to avoid lipstick on your teeth, put your index finger in your mouth and then draw it out slowly with your mouth closed. What you see on your finger is what would have ended up on your teeth! This one is from www. makeuptip.com. Remember that beauty is not everything.

Do you want to be successful throughout your life? Do you want to be happy and proud of yourself? Well, keep your chin up and work hard. Prove to yourself that you can take responsibility; motivate yourself by studying & working hard to make your life successful. Remember, don’t give up too easily, and if it becomes tough, then it’s a good time to go through the challenge because it will make you a stronger person. You will be surprised by how facing challenges will lead you into having a successful life. However, it can also make you feel stressed out, but, remember it will be better in the end and it will make you realize that you earned it. For example, if you want to be a basketball star, you will have to practice everyday, but when time comes, you would be ready & become a better basketball player.

Origin of Valentine’s Day
By Alyssa Ortiz

Ever wonder what started the whole Valentine’s Day? My mom always used to say that it was just a holiday that was invented by the greeting card companies to make more money. I didn’t want to believe her so I decided to do some of my own research and here is what I came up with. According to the website, www.thefunplace.com/valen/origin.html, the celebration of Valentine’s Day started in the time of Roman Empire. Emperor Claudius II was involved in several bloody wars and tried to recruit men for his army, he faced many difficulties because men didn’t want to leave their wives and loved ones. Emperor Claudius II became frustrated, then decided to ban all marriages till after the war in hopes that men would be more willing to join the army. There was a priest named Valentine; he arranged and conducted marriages in secret during this time. He was eventually caught and put into prison, but those who were married by him started to put aside a day in memory of him, and it caught on and that’s how we have Valentine’s Day.

Valentine’s Treat
Valentine’s Day is a day that couples celebrate their love for one another. This day usually consists of exchanging gifts, going out to dinner, and maybe a nice walk together. So I decided to interview some married individuals here at WSD to find out what their favorite Valentine’s Day was and what happened. Our principal Bill Newell says that most of the time, he and his wife go out to a nice restaurant for dinner and they enjoy it a lot. This year for Valentine’s Day, Mr. Fertig did something big for his wife. On Monday, he gave her two small useful things, on Tuesday, he gave her two of her favorite chocolate, Wednesday he gave her two paper cutout that signs “I love you” in ASL. Then on Valentine’s Day weekend, he surprised her with a trip to the beach and a overnight stay at a nice hotel!
