                      From the Rabbi...
Are you a Better Person this Year?

We’re approaching the Days of Awe soon, the High Holy Days. Can you remember
last year’s Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur? Did you ask for forgiveness and promise to
do better this year? Did you follow up on your promises? Did you make a difference in
the world this year – did you help anyone, reach out to someone who needed you? Yes,
making donations are important, but it is also very important to help someone physically –
give a meal and warm clothes to a homeless person, be a volunteer or mentor/tutor to underprivileged kids, walk
dogs that are sitting in a shelter. There are virtually countless ways to get out and help people and animals.
Growing up in Brooklyn, we attended Erev Rosh Hashanah (evening service). By the time we walked home
from shul my father z’l was calculating the type of dinner my mother z’l prepared. Bernie’s Bar B-Q on Church
Avenue delivered the kosher chicken, kishka, potato kugel, and gefilte fish. Naturally the challot were round and
the honey was on the table. If only my father had known what GOOD kosher wine taste like!
The services during the High Holy days ran for hours, or so it seemed to me as a kid. The best part was
hearing our Hazan, Cantor Ziegelman, a tall man with an even taller voice. If I reflect on some personal pride, it
was coming up for the Birkhat Kohanim (the Priestly Blessing). I was known from the age of 3 as the klainer
kohen (the small kohen). With a sqeaky voice, I would stand with the men and my brother year after year.
No matter how many memories I have of the services in synagogue and the family meals, it was the
preparations the few weeks before Rosh HaShanah that mostly stand out in my mind. We cleaned, cooked,
shopped for new clothes and the special prayers we would say daily What I cherish most were the memories of
giving tzedakah – I would push my coins into the JNF box, and each year the yeshiva gave us pushka boxes to go
out into the community and collect for programs in Israel. Never for our shul or school, it was ALWAYS for the
needy in Israel. Walking down the length of Ocean Parkway and going from apartment building to apartment
building asking for the needy in Israel made me feel like I was doing something productive.
Are you a better person for having lived this past year? Or, have you just gotten a year older?
The month prior to Rosh HaShanah, the month of Elul, is the time to make preparations for the New
Year. Answer these questions: What changes did you make this past year? Are you able to make amendments
for your mistakes, and will you? What have you learned this past year, what do you want to learn in the New
Year? Will you be the kind of person that God wants you to be in the New Year? Have you written down a list –
yes, actually sat down and wrote a list - of what you pledge to do in the New Year: contribute more to tzedakah
(charity), participate more in Tikkun O’lam (repairing the world), be kind to people and animals all the time,
eliminate lashon hara (spreading gossip) from your life?
I hope the year coming to a close was a good one for you, and I hope that you will prepare for the upcoming
year with care. May we all be better people this year, may we be kind, compassionate, and do acts of tikkun olam
often. May we become better educated as Jews, may we help make a minyan, may we save an animal from being
“put down” by adopting, may we help the State of Israel in its fight for survival, may we help the United States in
its painful path of declining morals, education, political discord to become as great a nation as it can be.

May we all become the people that God wants us to be.

With blessings for a most happy and healthy New Year, and for all of us to reach our goals, Simi and I wish you
all a Shanah Tova.

                    By Dorice Horenstein
Did you ever wonder why our Jewish New Year is in the fall?? It seems odd to
begin the New Year at that time when everything is preparing to be dormant for the
winter. Why not start in the spring when things are being born?
Here is a spiritual reason: The Jewish New Year unlike the secular new year is not
a time for parties and revelry. It is a time for serious reflection, the day of Judgment
when God opens the book of life and looks at all of our doings, making these days appropriate to occur
when the natural growth cycle is ending and old leaves are falling off; when we are looking over our past
deeds rather than focusing on the future. Just like a tree preparing to shed its glorious leaves, so are we
ready to shed old behaviors, to bare our souls before God the way the trees are baring their branches.
Wearing white adds to that symbolism. Isaiah 1:18 “Though your sins are scarlet they shall be as white
as snow.” The red leaves falling from a tree are a reminder to us of behaviors we want to drop from our
trunk of personal gifts, cover ourselves with a source of water, cleansing our soul. Rosh Hashana takes
place on the first of Tishrei when the moon is in its beginning to crest. Moving from darkness to light is
the theme of the High Holy Days. Our day begins at sundown and by Sukkot the Jewish thanksgiving
holiday, it is full and bright, offering hope for the year to come.
What do we do here at Shaarie Torah to get our soul ready? On Aug 18, and September 12, Rabbi
Zuckerman and I will have a session during Kiddush lunch getting ready for the High Holy Days by
discussing the month of Elul. In Hebrew, Elul stands as an acronym for Ani ledodi V’dodi lee. I am for
my beloved and my beloved is for me. What does that mean to you? How do you assess, repair, change,
grow and bring a sense of newness to your life by working on your relationships with others? I invite
you to join us as we begin this introspection that promises to elevate your High Holy Days experience.
Enjoy the rest of summer…you have one more month to go….and hope to see you in our family
services on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur or in the main sanctuary.
Please look at our Google calendar on our website at www.shaarietorah.org for all the different
events planned for this year! It is exciting and I hope to see you in many of them!

Kol tuv,
                                                       All the best

And may you have a sweet new year!

                                                                            Congregation Shaarie Torah

                    From the Carl Preschool
                    by Elizabeth Fleishman

Hope you are having a wonderful summer. We are looking forward
to the start of another successful school year at The Carl.
We have a great group of families and children just waiting to get
started. We get to start early this year so we can get in all the excitement
                     of the High Holidays.
At the start of each year the children get to know each other by
doing an auto-biography of themselves and their families. This year Rosh Hashanah is very
close to the start of the school year and gives us time to talk about it and Yom Kippur. This
is a time when we reflect on all the nice and not so nice things we have done lately. For
children of preschool age they can relate their behavior to more recent events than adults
do. The thought of going over events this last year is a difficult concept. They do
understand that some behavior is not OK and will do their best to do things differently and
better the next time! For example a child expressed his remorse about getting angry (and
punching) at his little brother for getting into his “special” toys. This prompts group
problem solving. We have great conversations about how siblings get into our “things” and
how we can handle it better or avoid the situation all together. Each child can come up with
a different solution to difficult situations; from “the baby” taking up too much of mom’s
time to how to help around the house. Mitzvah is central theme to these conversations. The
children are a great support for each other as they can relate similar situations with one
The children really look forward to our Rabbi’s visits – and no its not just the treats, but
the wonderful stories, torah and adventures he shares with us.
Please come by the preschool and enjoy the pictures the children will be doing. We call
it our children’s “Art Gallery”. Drawn pictures and photos taken of events and field trips
will be displayed through out the year. They will become a book at the end of the school
year that they can take home and enjoy for many years to come.
Our first field trip of the year will be to a local farm to see the Fall harvest and animals
in celebration of Sukkot. We usually car pool, if you would like
to join us please call the office for more information.
We have a few openings in both class this year as well as
the 5 day option. So, get your butterfly nets out and let’s get
more families involved in our great program! We are open to
the community and would like to recruit more Jewish families
to our wonderful synagogue and the other programs we offer
here. All Shaarie Torah members get a reduction in their tuition.
First day of school is September 12th!
