							Lena McLin....An Amazing Inspiration in
Music and in Life
I received an assignment last night to write a blog post about a woman who I admire and respect.
It could be anyone...alive or not....someone I know or not. It took me all of two seconds to come
up with this person. Her name is Rev., Dr. Lena McLin.

Dr. McLin is a pastor, educator and a world-renown musician. And I am honored to call Lena
McLin my friend and pastor.

I met her on one sunny afternoon in 1998...I believe...in Chicago, Illinois. I went there to take
singing lessons because one of my acting teachers thought I had a voice and thought I should
develop it.

And Lena McLin was the best.

It was painful in the beginning, I admit. I couldn’t sing one note, and this woman was a
consummate musician. She didn’t accept anything ‘less than’ from anyone.

If you walked in her room not feeling good about yourself and having your head hang down,
she’d make you look at your self in the mirror and she’d ask:

‘Who are you?”

The answer:

“I’m God’s perfect child.”

She always had a way of making you see the good in yourself, even if you didn’t want to see it.
Lena McLin taught music in the Chicago Public Schools for
more than 30 years.
And many of her students have gone on to become Grammy and Tony winners in all categories
of music.

I really struggled in the beginning. But as I have learned recently, it all had to do with me and the
things I tell myself. But I wanted to sing, so I kept at it. And miraculously, she let me keep
coming back. I’m ALL of her students were amazing singers from the 5 year olds to the 75 year
olds. I was not.

Even more amazing, is that she invited me to join the choir of her church...where she serves as
both pastor and musical director. Growing up, I never went to church, and the idea of spending
every Sunday in church was not that appealing. Not to mention Friday night choir rehearsals.

I mean, who puts choir rehearsals on a Friday night?

But it’s funny how God knows exactly the right string to tug on to get you to do what HE wants
you to do. I wanted to sing. So I went to church.

Every Sunday.

And low and behold...I liked it!

I instantly connected with my church, choir members and the message. I can’t even begin to tell
you how that experience has enriched my life. I honestly have never met anyone like her.

She is firm, yet inspiring...humble and commands respect. You may not always like everything
she says, but you know it always comes from a place of love and helping you to be the best you
can be.

Lena McLin is always so extraordinarily generous with her time...always just
a phone call away from any soul in need.

And her music!!

OMG.

This woman has written and arranged some of the most beautiful music that I have ever heard!

Gospel, pop, operas, cantatas,...and on and on. She is without a doubt one of the most respected
musicians on the planet today.

She has won countless awards and her music touches the hearts of people all around the world.

I am so grateful to have been included in her life, in her church and in her choir. Even as I write
this, I don’t feel that I have adequately conveyed how extraordinary Lena McLin is.

To know her is to love her, and I love her and am so grateful for her and the contribution Lena
McLin has made to my life.
