           how to solve problems by meeting halfway and
           necessary grammatical structures you need for this topic.




Evaluation vor Beginn der Unterrichtseinheit

 Before you start on the unit you should fill in the left side of the evaluation sheet. (M22)
 Keep the evaluation sheet in your folder. You will need it again at the end of this unit.




1. Phase:
Presenting family life and problems of famous TV-families


 Tasks:
 1. Name TV shows you like to watch. Describe briefly what the show is about.
 2. Describe the pictures. Make suggestions what the shows might be about. (M1)
 3. Listen to the conversations and complete the grid. Then compare your findings with
    a partner and complete your grid if necessary. (M2/M3)
 4. Choose one family. On the basis of your notes and the pictures prepare a “one-
    minute talk” in which you introduce the family and their problems. In small groups
    listen to the others’ presentations and give feedback using the evaluation sheet.

 5. Present your talk to the class.

2. Phase:
The Pattersons – problems of communication and different ways to solve them I
(giving advice)

 Tasks:
 Introducing the Patterson family: problems and communication
 1. Describe the pictures of the Patterson family (M5). In class brainstorm and
    collect keywords about the family and their relationships.
 2. Read the notes and find out about the Pattersons’ problems and what they are
    interested in (M6).
 3. Describe how the Pattersons communicate with each other (M7).
 4. Homework: Write a short text in which you compare life in the Patterson family
    to your own life at home (M8).


 Giving advice I: introduction of conditional II
 5. Read the chatroom messages and put them into the right order. (M9)
 6. Summarize Amy’s problem and Tess’ piece of advice (M9).
 7. The new grammatical structure of Conditional II is useful for giving advice.
    Match the clauses. Find the rule for making sentences with the Conditional II
    (M10).
 8. Workshop: Practise (giving advice) using the Conditional II (M11–M13).

 9. Homework: Write down two to three problems or difficult situations similar to
    Amy’s problem on a clue card. (compare: PB, p. 47: Chatroom messages)
 10. Read the letters from Mary and the agony aunt and underline useful phrases for
     giving advice. Write them in the box below. (M14)
 11. Exchange the problems you wrote down in your homework with your partner.
    Take a few minutes to think about your advice. Make sure that you include
    different phrases for giving advice and use if-clauses.
 12. Choose one problem for a short role play. A needs advice and B gives advice.
     Before you present your role play in class use the feedback sheet “Giving

(meet halfway)


 Tasks:
 Pre-listening:
 1. Some conversations become fights while others stay friendly. Look at the list of
    different reactions and sort them into two lists: ‘Right way’ and ‘Wrong way’. (M16)
 2. Compare your lists with a partner. Talk about differences. (M16)
 While-listening:
 3. You are going to hear two conversations. The first is between Kim and her parents,
    the second is between Jill and her parents. Fill the grid. (M16/M17)
 4. Give reasons why one of the girls gets what she wants and the other does not.
    Refer to your list of reactions. Discuss with your partner! (M16)
 Post-listening:
 5. Practise useful phrases for successful conversations with two exercises from the
    workbook: p. 31, ex. 11 and 12 (M18)
 6. Prepare a role play for class. Use the role cards (M19)
 7. Before you present your role play in class use the feedback sheet “Meet halfway” to
