Currently over 60 children are waiting for the friendship and guidance of Big Brothers and Big Sisters. Due to a shortage of volunteers, children - boys in particular - are waiting a very long time to be matched. Over half the children in our county will spend part of their childhood in single-parent families. Unfortunately these children are at greater risk for low-self esteem, low school performance, and significantly higher incidences of involvement with the juvenile justice system. Having a Big Brother or Big Sister has a significant impact on a child. A recent study of nearly 1,000 children involved in Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies found that those matched with Big Brothers and Big Sisters were far less likely to start using illegal drugs and alcohol, skip school, and encounter the juvenile justice system. The children with mentors noted better relationships with their family and peers and improved self-esteem. Big Brothers and Big Sisters make a difference! Find out how you can get involved.
