UCSF Women’s Health Undergraduate Research Internship for Summer, 2009
The Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences with the National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health at UCSF will offer summer research internships in women’s health to undergraduate students enrolled at the University of California at Berkeley who are planning to attend medical school after graduation, and who have an interest in women’s health. Students should be sophomores, juniors or seniors in the fall of 2009 at UCB. The internships will be 10 weeks in length (includes one week of vacation) and will be based with a faculty member in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences, with ½ day per week of clinical shadowing. A stipend (about $2500) will be provided. If you are interested, please fill out the short application below, which includes a form for a recommendation from a professor, GSA, program director, advisor or high school counselor who knows your work. Please also attach a short resume. There is rolling admissions with interviews in Jan. and Feb. Final deadline for submission of the application is Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2009. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT WHURI AT UCSF 1. What kind of research opportunities will there be in women’s health for the summer? There are both clinical and basic research opportunities available, spanning gyn cancer treatments and disparities among ethnic groups, to hormonal research, to environmental toxins in reproduction and more. You will be assigned to a faculty mentor in the department and a research group for the summer. 2. What type of clinical shadowing will be available? Clinical shadowing will be either at Oakland Kaiser or at the University of California, San Francisco. The goal will be to show you the broad scope of women’s healthcare, so you will be exposed to different clinical scenarios from Labor and Delivery, to clinic settings. 3. How many students will be selected? Most likely there will be 4 – 6 students selected for this first summer. A weekly support group will be provided by either Dr. Patricia Robertson or Dr. Juan Guerra, to help you process the experience, monitor your progress, problem-solve. 4. How often will the stipend be paid? Part of the stipend will be paid every two weeks. The actual amount will depend on how many tax dependents you declare, etc. Federal and state tax will be withheld, so the actual amount you receive, will be less than the $2500 but hopefully enough to pay your rent and food bills for the summer. 5. When can I take my week of vacation within the ten weeks? This decision will be between you and your assigned research faculty member. An ideal time would be when your faculty researcher is on vacation, but the week can be flexible. 6. If I have further questions, whom should I contact?
