Dynamic Systems helps Erickson’s implement an
innovative equipment tracking system with
CheckMate Toolroom Software using barcode
technology for speed and accuracy.

Erickson’s is a full service fire, water and flood damage services company. They handle
all aspects of fire, water and flood damage, trauma and biohazard clean up and act as a
full service construction contractor. The equipment used on their jobs can cost as much
as $10,000 for a high quality blower, and with multiple jobs in process at at any one
time, keeping track of their equipment was an issue. They found that the CheckMate
system was able to reduce time to track as well as loss of equipment that was deployed
to flood and fire damaged locations significantly.

A major issue for the restoration industry as a whole is making sure all equipment is
retrieved from job sites. They deal with disaster areas that are by nature hectic, so the
loss of equipment is common. One restoration company indicated that they had
blowers from several competitors in their warehouse that had been found abandoned
on large job sites.

When Erickson’s management team decided to solve this problem with a barcode
system, they discovered that the company had purchased a CheckMate tool tracking
system over 5 years before. They contacted Dynamic Systems and discussed their
options. Erickson’s decided to upgrade the software to its current version and to take
advantage of the latest in mobile technology that allowed them to use barcode
terminals that also have cell phone capability.

Currently, Erickson’s has over 2000 pieces of equipment, tools and consumables being
tracked in their warehouse, in trucks and on jobs. The equipment is checked out to a
job using a Motorola MC75 mobile terminal. Once a job is complete, the equipment is
either redeployed to another job or returned to the warehouse. If it is redeployed, the
MC75 records the transfer and transmits the data back to the main database via the cell
network, assuring that management knows where their equipment is at all times.

“Reporting is the best feature of this system,” states Eddie Karam, IT Manager for
Erickson’s. “The reporting features take away any questions as far as what equipment
was checked out to a job and whether everything has been collected at the end of the
job.”

He also listed the tracking of disposable (consumable) goods and great inventory
features as benefits of the CheckMate Toolroom software.

“I would recommend this software. It’s very powerful and yet extremely easy to learn
and use. The people at Dynamic Systems were there for us every step of the way.”
