From: Matt Collins, YNF Subject: Nason Creek Oxbow Monitoring, quarterly report July - Sept, 2008 Nason Creek Oxbow and Reference Site Snorkel Surveys We conducted three snorkel surveys each at the Nason Creek Oxbow, Nason Creek reference site and the Chiwawa River Oxbow reference site between August 8th and 20th, 2008. During this time, stream flows at the Nason Creek were between 71.5cfs and 85.5cfs (WDOE, 2008) with water levels at both Nason Creek sites as well as the Chiwawa River Oxbow reference site remaining relatively constant between visits. Water temperatures at the two Nason Creek sites ranged from 13.0°C – 15.9°C, while cooler water temperatures at the Chiwawa oxbow site remained a very constant 8.5°C. Dates, fish observed and the area (m2) snorkeled can be found in Table 1. Analysis and interpretation of the data will be presented in the final report. Observation Notes:  Low flows have begun to incise channels through shallow, wide reaches of the oxbow.  Original stream bed surface continues to emerge; continuous for approximately 60% of the entire Oxbow. Deep pools and glide still hold considerable pockets of thick, muddy sediment.  Juvenile salmonids were observed utilizing riffle sections.  Juvenile whitefish were observed throughout the oxbow.  Adult spring chinook (one pair, one female) were observed building redds within the oxbow. The shady, irregular spawning habitat appears more suited to coho than Chinook or steelhead for nest building.  Spatterdock continues to degrade significantly, although there is still thick growth in deeper, slow-water pools.  Great blue herons and mergansers have been observed fishing throughout the oxbow.
