What does your company do?

Journyx automates payroll, billing and cost accounting while easing management of
employee time and expenses, and provides confidence that all resources are utilized
correctly and completely. Founded in 1996, Journyx helps customers of every possible size
maximize their profitability and productivity. Customers include Crate&Barrel,
Schlumberger, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Callaway Golf and Honeywell.

Was there a specific turning point when you realized your business was moving to
the next level?

Not really. Even though we are 16 years old, I feel like we are still a work in progress. If I
really stop to think about all of our accomplishments so far, however, I realize we’ve
achieved quite a bit.

What processes or procedures have you implemented that have helped grow your
company?

We’ve implemented better accounting practices so we have more insight into our
financials. We’ve also implemented trackable customer support so we can tell where we
are with open and completed customer cases. In general, we’ve added a number of
measurement systems that enable us to take off the blindfolds and drive with vision.

What is most rewarding about running your business?

When customers tell me how wonderfully one of our employees treated them.

What challenges have you faced and how have you overcome them?

The 2000 tech meltdown and the 2009 recession were similar and both were hard to get
through. We had to cut employees which is a terrible thing for everyone. However, we
made it through the rough economic times and stayed in business which is a rarity among
technology companies of our time.

If you were starting over today, what would you do differently?

Wow, that’s a good question. I would do fewer giant experiments and more small ones.
That’s probably the best answer.

What advice do you have for other business owners?

Be different. Be unique. Be the only ‘fill in the blank’ that is out there and do it in a way that
people care about. Be first. Be different. Be crazy. Don’t be afraid to try something crazy. Do
something provable and relevant.

Please list any favorite books, tools or resources (software, website, etc.) you would
recommend for others:

I have many: anything by Clayton Christensen. Stratfor. The Economist.
Vistage. Neuromarketing.

What is something that people might be surprised to learn about you?

I eat at Casa De Luz (a vegan restaurant here in Austin) every morning after swimming
outdoors in Barton Springs (even all winter). I recently accompanied my son on a life-
changing retreat where he reversed his insulin-dependent Type I diabetes through diet
alone.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Focus on your personal health or your company will fail.
