About 5 million people visit their dentist with toothache every year 19 out of 20 people suffer from gum disease at some point in their life Nearly one-third of UK adults have 12 or more fillings. (BDA) 97% of people agree that dentistry is a vital part of a family’s overall health (National Smile Week Survey 2005) Only 11% of the UK population has fluoride added to their water. People living in fluoridated areas suffer much less tooth decay. (British Fluoridation Society) 6% of people think fluoride is only a gimmick to sell more toothpaste (National Dental Survey 2006) Smoking can cause bad breath, gum disease, tooth staining and mouth cancer Smoking and drinking account for the majority of cases of mouth cancer, which kills over 1,700 people every year. Fundraising helps Here are some of the ways that donations from supporters help the British Dental Health Foundation. £25 – Covers the cost of sending out three full Mouth Cancer Awareness Packs to health professionals, including a collection box, 50 pin badges, an information guide and a poster £50 – Enables the Foundation to send out detailed patient information leaflets to 166 members of the public who request written advice £100 – Pays for the Foundation to provide direct expert advice to 24 members of the public who call the Dental Helpline service because they are suffering with an oral health problem £500 – Would allow the Foundation to send a team of oral health educators into schools for a day, providing expert advice and literature to more than 200 pupils

Fundraising Ideas Whether it’s for the fear factor, for fitness or simply for fun there is an amazing range of fundraising events our supporters organise or take part in. Here are just some of our ideas to help inspire you. Bike Rides - set your own course and invite sponsorship Dress down Day – people will happily pay £1 for a chance to work in their slacks! E-bay Sale -sell your junk on eBay and donate the takings to the Foundation Foreign Fear Factor Events Golf Day Jumble Sales Marathon - 5k, 10k, half marathon Quiz- charge an entry fee and give half the takings to the Foundation and half to the winning team Rafting Raffles Sponsored silence - going a whole day without speaking is a real challenge – especially for those of us who talk a lot! Two minute challenge - run a competition to see who can brush for closest to two minutes without the aid of a clock. You can charge £1 entry and split the takings between the winner and the Foundation Cake Bake – Bake cakes and sell them to your family and friends Weather Lottery- Enter the weather lottery through the foundation’s website. Members of the Lottery get five chances to win up to £10,000 for just £1 per week.

WHAT DO I GET? Fundraisers who reach one of the minimum targets will receive a certificate ‘Golden Supporter’ (£100) ‘Silver Supporter’ (£50) ‘Bronze Supporter’ (£25) These certificates can then be displayed in your practice, school or workplace throughout the year providing a demonstration of your support of the Foundation and of your charitable achievements.

Skydiving – a year round fundraiser You can show your support to the British Dental Health Foundation while giving yourself a challenge by taking part in 10,000 feet skydive. What is even better is that the Foundation will organise the whole thing, with the help of professional event organisers, Skyline. What type of jump? The Foundation offers three types of parachute jumps. If you raise the minimum sponsorship amounts, you can jump for free! Handy Hints and Tips Organising your own even for the British Dental Health Foundation can be extremely good fun and very rewarding. To help you on your way, here are our 6 steps to success. Step 1: Planning your event Keep your ideas simple. Consider your skills and the resources available to you. Form a small fundraising committee with your friends and family. Set a budget and stick to it. Set a target for how much you would like to raise. Allow yourself enough time to plan your event. Choose an appropriate venue. Contact the British Dental Health Foundation’s Fundraising Team and tell them what you are planning to do.
Step 2: Organising your event Write a-to do list with a date by which you need to achieve each task. Assign the tasks to members of your fundraising committee and try and stick to your deadlines. Draw up a list of equipment/catering needs. Check with the council if licences are needed. Check whether insurance is needed. Conduct a risk assessment of your venue.
Step 3: Publicising your event Tell people about your event and why you are doing it. Use posters, leaflets and emails to publicise your event. Approach your local newspaper and radio station and tell them what you’re up to.

Step 4: The Day of your event Have fun and try and make sure all your supporters have a good time as well. Take photographs and send copies to the British Dental Health Foundation.
Step 5: After your event When it’s all over, thank everyone involved with your event. Count up the money raised and send it to the British Dental Health Foundation. Evaluate how well the event went.
Step 6: Donating your money You can donate funds to the British Dental Health Foundation charity in a number of ways. If you go to www.dentalhealth.org/donations/ you can make a one-off donation by credit/debit card. Keep it legal, keep it safe When organising an event it is important to keep it both legal and safe. The following information provides general guidance only. Raffles If you wish to hold a raffle during your event, you do not need a licence so as long as the ticket sales and the draw take place during your event and there are no cash prizes. A public lottery, which is a raffle open to members of the public with ticket sales over a period of time, must be registered with you local authority. If in doubt, check with your local authority or with the Gaming Board of Great Britain before processing with your raffle. Licences Some activities, such as the sale of alcohol, provision of food or drink, street collections or sale of goods, require a licence from your local authority. Check with your local authority beforehand and ensure you have the required licence. Insurance If your event involves the public you may require public liability insurance, to provide protection against any costs and compensation awards. If using a venue there may be insurance already in place. Alternatively, contact your own insurers, your company’s insurers or the British Dental Health Foundation.

Safety Checklist Does the venue have adequate lighting parking, facilities and disabled access? Is the venue big enough to hold anticipated number of attendees? Do you have enough people supervising/marshalling the event? Have you informed the emergency services and do you have first aid provision? Are children adequately supervised? Are you providing appropriate protective or hygiene clothing? Do you have adequate means of disposing rubbish? Do you need to make provision for lost children? Please note that the British Dental Health Foundation cannot accept responsibility for accident, injury, loss or damage as a result if your event. It is impossible for us to provide a complete list of safety advice and recommend your contact your local authority/environmental health department prior to proceeding with your event. Promoting your event Letting people know about your event is crucial to its success. All of your fundraising material should say ‘in aid of the British Dental Health Foundation, Registered Charity No 263198.’
