Reverend’s Reflections november 2009
Dear People of St. Luke’s:
I invite you to reflect in prayer on scripture in a new way—from a very ancient tradition. Here is what you do: 1.Choose a short Bible passage. There are lots of ways to do this. One is to read what is assigned in the Book of Common Prayer for the day—Forward Day by Day is a free pamphlet you can pick up in the narthex which will give you choices. (Or you can look in the back of the BCP, Lectionary Year 1, for the appropriate week and day after Pentecost.) Choose one reading only. Another way is to start one of the books of the Bible—a Gospel or one of Paul’s letters—start at the beginning and only choose short sections for a given day. 2.Be in a place that is quiet, where you are alone and won’t be interrupted. 3.Read the Bible passage over, slowly, more than once. As you do so, note in your mind or even by writing down any words or phrases that catch your attention. This isn’t an exercise in puzzling out history, names of people you don’t know anything about. This is an approach to help you grow spiritually, so for now skip over the puzzling places— you might save them for further exploration later. 4.Listen for what is new in the words, or how this reading and mulling over relates to where you are that day—how you are feeling, what you have been enjoying or struggling with. 5.Respond—offer back to God any insights you may have gleaned. 6.Spend some final moments silently sitting with God—like you would on a long car ride with someone you know well: after the initial conversation at the start of the journey, you lapse into comfortable silence for a time. Let me give you an example from a part of my own prayer life. Here is the passage from Mark for Sunday, October 25th, the one I’m preparing for this week: “Jesus and his disciples came to Jericho. As he and his disciples and a large crowd were leaving Jericho, Bartimaeus son of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the roadside. When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout out and say, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!" Many sternly ordered him to be quiet, but he cried out even more loudly, "Son of David, have mercy on me!" Jesus stood still and said, "Call him here." And they called the blind man, saying to him, "Take heart; get up, he is calling you." So throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. Then Jesus said to him, "What do you want me to do for you?" The blind man said to him, "My teacher, let me see again." Jesus said to him, "Go; your faith has made you well." Immediately he regained his sight and followed him on the way.” During a recent time of sitting with this Gospel some of what stood out for me: sitting by the roadside—being out of the main action, sidelined, not noticed (and reflections go on and on—to a recent time when I was at an event at another parish but not wearing my collar, and folks treating me differently once they realized I was a priest, and how welcome and esteem shouldn’t depend on such things; living and working in Scituate, off the beaten path from the greater Boston area; wondering once again how to make my voice heard from among so many on issues of our day and time; whether sometimes God doesn’t want me to sit on the side of the road rather than be at the center of the show). Blindness: what do I not see? Why? “Take heart”…yes, there is hope. Jesus calls us. He followed him on the way—no longer sitting on the sidelines, but following Jesus. Take time out then to see anew? I’m only starting to tap into the train of thoughts that arises from this passage. Instead of being all over the place by the end of the process, I usually end up focusing on one or two words, ideas that rise up as most powerful, important. If I were to read the same passage several months later, I suspect different words will emerge with different emphases. This way of praying the Bible brings us into closer conversation with scripture, God, and our own true selves. Beginning to end you probably want to set aside at least a half hour for this process. If you choose to do this, let me know. I’d like to hear your experiences. Blessings on you,
Grant

WELCOME
New Dutton Hall Tenants
We are so very pleased to announce that St. Luke’s leadership has signed a lease agreement with South Shore Support Services, a private non-profit agency working with elders and their needs. Dutton Hall will be used Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. for an adult day care program. The agency and program come with years of experience and a solid planning process. Not only will we be helping meet the needs of elders in our area who have various degrees of impairment, and their caretakers at home, but in addition the program hopes to employ present students and graduates of the Scituate vocational education training in cooking and custodial work. Although we have signed the lease, the actual program is still in preparation phase. The first clients will be reporting to their day care program at the earliest in mid-November.
Do you long for a respite from the noise and demands of life? Continuing on Tuesdays all are invited to a time of quiet reflection, prayer, silence, sometimes quiet background music. We’ll start at 6:30 p.m. with a short spiritual reflection. By 6:45 we will have a sustained time of silence and centered prayer. At 7:15 simple prayers will wrap up the evening by 7:20. Meeting in the Gordon Room (the ‘living room’).

This wine tasting event is not limited in the number who can attend, but we need to know who is planning on being there so Dan can plan accordingly. The cost is $10 per person to cover expenses . And bring a favorite cheese to share to along with the wine!

A Request for Help…
The Dianna DeVanna Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect, located in Braintree, supports MA families in need of parenting aid and education in raising a family. The Center also works with parents to teach them about creating safe and stable environments for families and offers alternatives for children in need of a safe place to go. They rely heavily on the generosity of outside organizations for donations and support. They are currently in need of diapers of all sizes, especially sizes 3,4,5,& 6. They would be deeply grateful for any assistance and would be happy to come and pick up any donated items. Contact: Patricia Clabough, Program Director www.devannacenter.org
Dear Members of St. Luke’s,
Thank you so much for the prayer shawl. Not only does St. Luke’s have a special place in my heart because it is the parish where I grew up, but also because of the special warmth I feel when I walk through the doors. I told Brendan to remember the special prayers from you all when he wraps it around him, especially when he has a difficult day. Warm Regards, Marcia Daly

VESTRY UPDATE:
Our October Vestry meeting began with Evening Daily Devotions. Russ Wood discussed property issues, including the hiring of Taylor Lumber (Marshfield) to do the plowing of the church and the rectory. Our Stokes loan has been approved and we will begin work on the septic system at the rectory as soon as the funds have been disbursed. We are hiring the Episcopal Church Foundation as consultants for our Capital Campaign. The consultant will lead us through three phases: discernment, feasibility, and solicitation. Garin Arevian has negotiated some slight reductions in the fees. A lease has been signed with South Shore Support Services, Inc. to operate an affordable adult day care program in Dutton Hall, Monday through Friday. Chris Dietz reported disappointment in the number of pledges in so far. Sunday, October 18th will be the conclusion of the drive, and committee and Vestry members will contact those that have not pledged. We have a new sexton, Roger Shields. He began his duties as of October 13th.
